Mini Cooper F56 rear brake pad warning at 13000 miles

My wife owns 2016(65 plate) Mini Cooper and it currently has 13000 miles on it. On startup a warning on the dash says service 1000 miles. Looking into the menu this is telling us the rear pads need changing in 1000 miles at the latest. The car was serviced a month ago and the rear pads were 5 mm. Turns out the sensor is set to go with still 4mm of pad remaining which in my understanding is way too early. Not impressed Mini!
