Dogs and Minis

Me and the missus are considering getting a dog, something mid-size like a collie or similar. I've got an R56 Cooper S. I'm not convinced the boot area itself would be very comfortable but obviously with the seats down there's a fair size area. However, the 'step' between the rear seats and boots may prove a problem? Does anyone ferry their dog about and how do they do it?
