Hello!

I have had a search but couldn't find anything relevant.

I am doing tough mudder in a few weeks for the first time which I am really excited about!

I am a regular gym goer (strength) and have pretty good cardio through cycling.

I own a pair of Nike Free Runs 5.0 which are very comfortable however, I fear they will be like ice skates in the mud on the course!!!

Could you tell me what you ran tough mudder in and if you have any recommendations. I feel I will use the shoes again for further events so I am prepared to spend a considerable amount rather than cheap and chuckable!

I have look at the Adidas Terrex Agravic Speeds which look like a great trail/road shoe but these are quite narrow.

Many thanks!

I have not done a tough mudder but i have done similar in the past (it was the people i met doing these events who got me into triathlon and ironman), check out www.mudstacle.com for advice on clothing and shoes etc.You cant go wrong with Inov8 shoes IMO but the market is very big.

Innov8 are excellent, but have a small heel to toe drop. I use salomon speedcross', which I absolutely love (now that I've glued the insole in at least!). However I can also strongly recommend more mile Cheviots 3s. They're amongst the cheapest trail shoes at about £30, but have excellent reviews. Also, don't pay full price. Google more mile discount code and a plethora of discount codes from running clubs will come up!

A lot of people I know that have done it wore old trainers and left them behind (it's a thing). I've seen plenty in Vibrams - the off-road ones; since they're easily washable for reuse...

Personally, I've done it twice barefoot. I had about the same grip as everyone else in the torrential rain.. but weather does play a huge part in it. A glorious sunny day and anything will do; wet, and it probably matters not (i.e. wellies would be just as useful).

Are you doing it for time, or fun?

I'd personally suggest anything you regularly run in and ideally ones that are ready for the bin!

The mix of terrain and fact they'll be soaked through multiple times means I've never brought a pair of trainers home, usually an enormous pile of binned trainers at the central "camp" area....

I've recently started trail running, and am wearing Salomon XA Lite. I didn't bother spending the extra for the goretex.

I find them comfortable, suitably stable and reasonably grippy on trails.

any trail running trainer really, something with a big tread is probably better, inov8 or salomon are a good bet.

I used Salomon Speedcross 3's when i did judgement day ( same kind of thing as tough mudder) and they were great. Neck deep in muddy water, knee deep in mud and scrambling over walls etc didn't so then gripping brilliantly. After the even i threw them in the washing machine and they came out like new.

I wear a pair of Asics Lahar trail for pretty much everything except horrible deep mud. I have a pair of Inov8 for that. The later have no cushioning whatsoever, so if you're running lots of road / hard surface, injury is a real possibility (well it is for me), but if it's really and genuinely soft ground, go for a pair. They are not expensive, and they do grip well.
