First time ever this Monday. I'm older than the hills, will I die, any tips? Any improvements it'll make?

It's been recommended through work hence why I'm going..

I can punch, Ive been taught defence etc. I did all the Karate stuff for 9yrs when I was young. The hitting bit isn't what I'm looking for. Where I am lacking is takedown and groundwork.

Touching grappling and throws is what I need.

Plus something else physical additional to cycling.

Is spending years learning how to knock somebody out with a kick in the street actually a good use of time?

You could quite easily apply the same test to football, cricket, golf, fishing, track days or any other number of pastimes. If you enjoy it, who cares?
If you train to knock someone out it's a sad state of affairs.

I did 9 years of martial arts for fitness, the mystic of learning a Japanese martial art, fun, friendship etc.

I'm doing Judo for a variety of reasons. If I wanted to knock someone out I'd choose something more nasty.

This thread has me itching to get back into a contact/grappling sport. At 41, it's also setting my repaired elbow and ankle itching.... frown
Im 47.

I fairly regularly smash myself up mountain biking.

I've decided to switch the road cycling more and less falling 8ft down chutes.

There is only one old injury that may stop things; slap/rotator cuff tear from 4years ago. I was due surgery but cancelled as it healed itself..

I think body build is a lot to do with how effective judo is. I am 6'2" so have to bend the knees quite a lot to get under most opponents to effect the throw. Conversely, I am quite easy to throw. I think judo is much easier for stocky, less tall people.
I'm 6'2 with a good reach and looooong body. laugh

Well I really enjoyed that. I'm going to get a thick PJ suit smile

I learn how to fall.

How to grab someone, sweep leg forward and drop them then put them into a hold on the floor before moving into kneeling with hands clapsed then back again. It felt natural.

Looking at Gi's.

So far it's Mizuno and I'd prefer blue so it doesn't yellow etc.

Any other brands?

I'd be tempted to push the boat out abit and spend £150 for longevity and look at it lasting 10yrs.

Shame there is no general MA thread.

Cool kids may hang out on the BJJ one, but all they talk about is BJJ.
Start one, theres a few MMA lads on the BJJ thread. I've done a couple of low level classes lately, Last nights was an introduction into clinching and how hand fighting leads to a neck/collar tie and what happens if you get to either a Thai clinch or double unders etc.

Really interesting and makes you think.
The issue with MMA for me it's a recipe to get me in trouble. I'd happily jump into a dedicated MMA thread though and be proven wrong
