Anchorman: "White shirts, yellow helmets, white ground... it's kind of like a camouflage!"
Pundit: "Well not really, the yellow helmets give them away!"

I don't get NFL at all. Do they have to wear all that padding. Surely one of the fast guys minus all that gear would be that much faster.

The americans seem to have very odd ideas about sport in general.

Try running full pelt into a guy who weighs 300 lbs, then come back and ask me that question again! hehe

I love the NFL and SKY's coverage is excellent. (Didn't know 5 had any).

I sat in a sports bar in Chicago and watched the Bears v Redskins game a few weeks ago with a load of yanks. Brilliant.

Two live games, they cover the late matches on Sunday and Monday nights.... tis the wee small hours over this side of the pond, so you may need a few stiff coffees!!

Over here we have a game called 'Rugby'. The main difference (other than not wearing padding) is that the big guys (only around 280lbs) in rugby actually have to be able to move, rather than just block. Rugby also involves extended periods of play without a break (ie longer than 20seconds).

Also, in rugby its illegal to block a defender from making a tackle (unlike NFL). You see bigger hits in rugby, fact.

I'm starting to watch NFL a bit more as I start to to understand it all but I still like Ice Hockey a lot more.

Hey Steve, you mis-quoted everyone.... should be like this!!!

Somewhat of a condescending comment don't you think.... especially in reference to an international sport!!

Where exactly do you think I come from?
(HINT: check my profile!!!)

ps. You obviously know nothing about American football, maybe you should go down to your local club, put on some pads and take a few hits!!

Carolina at Philadelphia tonight... it just has to be more inspiring than the slow death England are engaging in against Australia.

Similar to your comment then?rolleyes

If you are going to quote me, do it properly and include the emoticon indicating humour.... now restored to it's rightful place.

Look, you don't get NFL, that's fine.. none of us are going to lose any sleep over it, but unless you try to understand the sport then there really is little point in you "contributing" to this thread is there!!

The reason they wear padding is because the style of hitting would be dangerous without it... the rules and techniques are not the same as rugby, hence why comparison is without merit!

Besides, professional rugby players from both codes do wear protective gear these days, it may not be NFL style hard body armour, but it is still protection... check the link if you don't believe me!!

Here are another couple of links to the IRB website, detailing the rules for protective equipment and the range of approved items:

Hmmmm, think I've just proved you wrong on that point!

So you don't think NFL players can move?!!.... pretty odd statement considering that some of the fastest sprinters in the world play in the NFL, not to mention that fact that a number of former olympians have played in the league... ok, the linemen are quite bulky, but the mobility and fitness of the linebackers, full backs and tight-ends would put many rugby forwards to shame, whilst the running backs and strong safeties would be more than a match for the likes of Mike Tindall.

Blocking is just one aspect of the game and there is a limit to what can be done.... making big hits and ferocious tackles (rugby style) are just as important to the defensive strategy and game play.

Did anyone else see the feature that Shaun Gayle did on tackling and blocking techniques the other day?

The way he was able to make those incredible double plays, first stepping up to the line to make blocks on linemen, then releasing in an instant to tackle the running back... awesome player!! bow
