I've read a few times about sealing the rear quarter windows, but what about the black trim that is painted on the glass before the sealant??

My passenger side window really needs it now but I'm not sure if I need to remove the glass and re-paint it first, or if there is some easy stuff that can be put on (perhaps by a widow replacement firm?)

Anyone have any input?

Thanks,
Gareth

Oh...

Thats not great news I guess.
I remember seeing some good windows in a brocken V8 last year but maybe I am better just getting new ones.

Thanks.

It’s the 2 inch black boarder around the edge of the windows (on the inside). I never thought about tinting but I would still like to see through the class so I wonder if its possible to just tint then very dark, just around the edge as it is now?

I'll look into this as my brother owns a body shop and doesn’t think that painting is really an option (try it as a last resort was his opinion). Replacements are about £105 each + vat from SJ Sportscars.

Yea, so the upshot is that it's the primer that is pealing away and so it should not be a problem to fix.

But I need to do this ASAP as so far I have nice tanks that dont leak.

If they have been leaking, will the foam under the tanks dry out on its own or do I need to do something with this?

Cheers for everyones help,
Gareth

Hi

I took the car to the loal Autoglass centre. They said it shouldn't be a problem.

They will replace the current 'primer' with a newer spray on kind and it should look no different than origional. Cost is about £50 and they want to car for a day (hmmm not sure why they need a full day!).

Anyway, I will get it in next week.

The trim is painted on anyway so you wont be doing yourself any favours by replacing the windows.
The workshop manual even gives you all the new dimensions for re-applying the trim. I can scan and e-mail them to anyone that would like them.

I’m glad the wiper is still working! You don't want that job again!

It cost me about £40 to have the windows repaired "correctly". The glass place told me that they used a new type of paint now that shouldn’t suffer the same - only time will tell!

If your windows are not leaking, then I cant see any problem with going down your route. Its also possible to seal them from the inside anyway with silicone sealant as the paint you have on the outside will cover it - is that what you did?

Time for me to sleep!

Gareth

The seal is just made from 'betaseal' (not sure how they spell it)
They take the window out, clean all the old sealant off both the body and the glass, re-apply the trim (paint) to the inside of the glass, then re-assemble creating a new seal with 'betaseal'. According to the w/shop manual they use small rubber blocks to support the glass so that they can create a layer of sealant that is the correct thickness.

I took of the door pillar trim panels and also the panels inside the car before I took it in so that they wouldn’t break them.

Unfortunately I won't have access to the manual until the weekend now.

From what I was told by the AutoGlass place that fixed my windows the tint is 'basically' the same type of material as is used around the edge, but darker. The book has the removal and fitting procedure (basically as Calvin has already said) and also the dimensions for applying the new seal material.

After getting way too carried away mine is sitting on the ramps with no Engine, Transmission, Suspension, brakes, etc.. . Have a nice powder coated chassis now though I really wish I could get it on the road by next weekend but I guess I've a lot of work yet.

In the end I paid £50 per window to have mine done, the primer was not a problem at all in the UK, strange that it should be different for you.

But, it looks like a simial price really.
