Mate just buy a VAG product and cry when it sts it's dsg, dpf, egr, etc etc at crazy cost but vag owners seem to think the marque is reliable cos the old ads say so.

You bought a secondhand Type R knowing it's probably not seen a main dealer for years, it's on big rims and is a petrol high revving sports car. An old owner stuck a dog in it not Honda engineers.

What did you expect a one year old Polo diesel?

Sorry to be harsh but..
I accept I should have been more circumspect given the condition of the wheels and the slight exhaust rattle, however it had a full book of service stamps, plenty of paperwork, last three services were at a main dealer who I spoke to and who confirmed the mechanical condition prior to purchase.

I'm not crying, I am just saying I don't enjoy it as much as I thought, and given this I am trying to decide whether to spend the time and money fixing it up (wheels, exhaust, front splitter mainly) or move it on. Mechanically, rattling baffles aside, it seems to be in good nick, though the valve clearances don't appear to have been done recently. It drives perfectly. I've already managed to get rid of the smell of dog, fix a broken electric mirror, I have a blower motor coming to fix the central fan vents (hopefully).

Oh, and the various interior rattles I would suggest are due to suspect build quality.

The interior rattles surprise me quite a bit...the DC5 interior is sparse but everything is very well attached/stuck down. My first honda so i assumed they were all like that.

Although, the Fn2 is built in the UK and not japan right? might have something to do with it.
Built in Swindon. I have sorted two rattles already and another two have developed. Plus the various internal electrical niggles. Not what I expected from a Honda!

Get an import next time!

I'm sure once you sort these little bits and pieces it'll seem better. Try to focus on the overall driving experience and the little stuff won't seem quite as important.

You will have similar issues with any performance car that's a few years old, i've never owned a brand new car, which probably helps my expectations when it comes to these things.
I have received a quote of 80 to 150 to replace the backbox from a local exhaust shop, which is much more reasonable. Will get that done this week hopefully.

How much did you pay for yours? I'd get a milltek non res exhaust from abp sport as they will be doing a Christmas promotion.

The bumper is standard fn2 fault that it doesn't look aligned. Mine has the same look and tgm sport informed me it was a common query.

Love my fn2. Fantastic cars
6k, plus 530 quid for four new tyres and about 100 quid in other odds and ends. I think that's a decent enough price for an 09 with sub 60k miles.

I'd rather keep it stock to keep my insurance premiums sensible tbh, though it might be worth exploring with my insurer what the premium impact would be if I added a performance exhaust and air filter (as if I was doing one, I'd want to do the other!).

Did TGM Sport manage to fix it or is it just a live with it sort of deal? Mine has a couple of scuffs so it has definitely been bumped once or twice.

Still got it OP or did you decide to chuck it on the classifieds?
Chucked it on the classifieds (hence the various post deletions) but no decent offers. Just ordered a stainless steel M2 backbox from TDI North - just released so first production run, bought it as it is modular and the rear section can be fitted to stock front section, so it was only 260 quid.

Then on boxing day the car stung me for 478 quid - seized driver side front caliper, destroyed pads and discs, needed pads discs and a new caliper. Ugh. Mechanic noted that the rear discs (which the previous owner changed last summer) were cheap ebay grooved discs of crap quality, which he found odd as rear discs from Honda are only thirty quid each. He said the rattling exhaust has also been packed with foam to keep it quiet. He suspects the rattling exhaust is from it being dropped off the car - did the chap have a stainless steel exhaust on? Doesn't fit with the story about it being his wife's car for the school run. Not much adds up.

Currently costing me an awful lot of money and I am always wondering what is going to be next to break! I have went through receipts in detail and although it is FSH, I think it has never had anything more than a oil and filter change. When I get the exhaust fitted I will have valve clearances done and looks like at next service I will need to get spark plugs etc replaced also.

Had the car three months and have spent best part of 1700 quid on it already. That's a significant sum of money to me and it doesn't look like it will be the last I have to spend... especially considering as the wheels are in desperate need of a refurb and the front wheel arch trim is hanging off. It has also developed some unsightly white clouding of the paint on the rear passenger side wing.

What is your cut off point with this car then ?

If you haven't got a figure your not willing to go over then your just going to keep spending out and spending out on this car and you'll never recoup it when you sell.

Great news for whoever buys the car off you.
Yeah, whoever buys the car from me will get a much better car than I bought haha.

I needed to do the discs, pads and calipers, so I just had to suck it up. I was going to try and sell without refurbing the wheels and replacing the exhaust, then I thought oh fk it merry christmas and bought the exhaust (and I thought it would be a hard sell if I hadn't had them done) ... and a week later the brakes needed done. What can one do.

Perhaps I should have traded it in for a loss a month ago but such is life.

I certainly don't think I will get much more than 5800-6300 for it once fixed, so if I sold next week I would be 1500-2000 quid out of pocket in three months. redface

OP what's the history like? Mines full Honda annual history and doesn't seem to have any of the same issues.
FSH, last three histories are from main dealer. One warning sign I didn't spot was that the annual health check was done by Honda indicating rear discs and pads needing replaced - and the work was refused and carried out himself. I also think the main dealer services were nothing more than oil filter - can see no evidence of valve clearances or spark plugs having been done. I think I have been sold a bit of a lemon with a bit of polish.

How are you enjoying it so far? What's the ride like - is it on 19s? Any oil consumption?

It's on 18's. The rides good but I always dodged potholes etc in any car.

No oil useage. It's stayed on the full marker over 2,000miles since the last service so hopefully it'll remain this way.
Maybe the 18s are much better than the 19s. Or maybe my suspension is fked biglaugh It's truly dreadful.

I've used around 1.5l in 2000 miles. Think i need the valve clearances done, hopefully that will help ...

The type/grade of oil seems to have a lot to do with how much is burned, it really is pot luck.
I use Fuchs Titan 5w40 but many seem to be recommending shell helix (sp), Castrol, some even 10w60.

My fn2 is currently for sale as I fancy an fd2, though it's a very bad time of year to sell a car. Stick with it OP, all used cars require maintenance / wear and tear items replaced. I've bought two front suspension top Mount bearings for mine today, £70 from Honda which I also won't recoup if the car sells.
I am fairly sure my car has the Honda standard 0w30 in it - so at service time I will get it changed to 5w40 to see.

I think it's probably the right move, I am just worried that the car hides other secrets and the engine grenades itself in a fortnights time.
