Avionic/Aerospace apprentice advice...

hi all,
I am 22 and applying for some Aerospace engineering apprenticeships starting 2011. I know there will be lots of applications for these and want to try and make it so i stand out a bit more as i don't have an engineering backgruond.
Does anybody have any advice/suggestions for shorts course etc to do first? I have decided to do a couple of the practical modules from the EASA license course and I am going to try and arrange some work experience but I really want to do everything i possibly can to increase my chances.
any suggestions welcome.
