Who knows what abuse the engine endured before the internals staged their little jailbreak,
I am surprised by the number of M car owners that take the variable rev limit (6K when cold, 8K when hot) as guidance and hit 6k within minutes of a cold start. That can't be helpful for engine longevity. But surely good for street cred!

Bmw m cars should be able to ... sit on the limiter!
No. That's not what the rev limiter is for. It's there to prevent momentarily overspeeding the engine as you accelerate through the gears, not for some sort of near continual use. The rev limiter cuts fuel and/or spark to keep the engine speed down. This is not exactly great for the engine but far less harmful than overspeeding it.And odds are this engine has been chipped, perhaps even raising the rev limit. Not a recipe for engine longevity.
