I'd agree.

I had an F10 M5 from new. Financial hiding aside, it was very quick but in an unconnected/unbiddable way, too heavy, too muted and generally just lacking the tactility that the E46 M3 has.

Of the latest batch of M cars, the M2 holds quite a lot of appeal

I'm forty one years old but still remember Autocar / Frankel reviewing the McLaren F1 when I was mid-teens. Mostly I remember 243 MPH !!! Mind. Blown.

Also, miss my old E46 M3 so have bought another. Collecting this on Saturday.

I have driven/owned a lot of cars over the years and the E46 M3 is a standout.
