I am really tempted by the new m4. I have had a test drive of a rear wheel drive one a while bck but been holding off buying one as i had a deposit on a 911 which may never come, plus is also a fair bit more expensive and rather less practical.

My concern is having come from a 330i, I worry that given peed cameras and no expecctations to take it on track it is often going to feel a bit "typical bmw" when in traffic and at normal speeds - not that that is a bad thing, but then i could save a fair bit of money and get a non m car.

How have people who have got them found them? Anyone prefer the rear wheel drive version? I know you can drive the 4wd in rear wheel anyway.

Really on the fence so anyones feedback will help - thank you

The porsche will always feel more special but you are paying a price for it.
M4 will feel nice but not special.

I’m on my 3rd G82 with over 30,000 miles covered between them, and it really is a cracking car. It’s fast yet comfortable and surprisingly practical. As a daily it suits me down to the ground.

I’ve had both steel and ceramic brakes and the latter certainly make it an incrementally better car (if not 8k worth). The carbon buckets are essential in the M4, not just because of the support and comfort they offer, but also the essential couple of inches knee room they offer in the rear.

The other essential for me is the full leather as this makes the interior feel so much nicer. Whichever spec you ended up with though, they are great to drive.

Take a decent test drive - I’ve gone RWD every time as I have never come across a time with my G82 M4’s when I felt 4WD was remotely required. However, if you live in Scotland, I could certainly understand why 4WD might be preferable.

The xdrive version is by far the more popular choice.
M xdrive is not to be confused with typical full time 4wd systems.
The car is in rear wheel drive unless the stability sensors note things like rear wheel slip.
So the car is in rwd the vast majority of the time but if you lose traction then (rather than reduce power in the non xdrive version) the excess power is sent to drive the front wheels.

In isolation I agree but when compared with other cars in the market it's not so strange, especially when you consider the spec. We don't get the non competition in the UK.

I do find it weird though. I still expect a golf to be £15k as it was when I was learning to drive

I look at a 2nd hand previous shape M4 conv from 2020. It’s about £42k.

Nearly new new shape M4 conv…… 100k plus…!

The interior of the last one is about 45 years old. It's probably a more fun car in some ways but the new one is far more capable.

I agree the convertibles are mad price.

Can get a M4 at the minute for about 10% off list. More if you go rear wheel drive.

I do really like the way it drives though, and the interior adds a bit of nostalgia to the 2006 E90 330d that we had back in 2006!

Yeah if you can get a manual it's a proper retro feel.

I drove one and thought it was superb, far more likely to kill you than the current one but that was some of its charm wink

As for the person who mentioned the m5, a neighbor has one and it's great it's just massive (not that the M4 is small mind). If they were similar price new I'd be more tempted

it's straight-up inflation and de-valuing/loss of purchasing-power of currencies, we have to spend more £££ for the same amount of goods and services.

It's not so much that cars are becoming more expensive, more so that currencies are losing purchasing-power and we are having to spend more, plus that coupled with global supply chain issues too.
