Rolex BLNR "Batman" - buy at premium?
Discussion
Morning!
Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR "Batman"
I'm looking to pickup one of these in the next few days. Emailed local AD and they say company wide out of stock and 2 year waiting list.
I can buy one from a local jeweller at a premium, retail was £5950, can pick one up for £7200 or so. (Unworn 2016 model apparently)
My question is, if i pay £1k+ over retail - is this justified. Is it likely to hold its price? Or am i buying something that will sell at £4k in a couple of years.
(yes i know, buy it because i like it not because it will hold its value etc etc)
Is there a price increase coming which will justify paying over the odds? And are they discontinuing this model?
There are a few available on ebay at the £6.5k mark but i'd rather buy from somewhere i trust.
Thoughts appreciated, cheers!

The reason there is no stock is largely the result of Brexit and the crashing of the pound which combined with the 'current' lower Rolex retail prices in UK, means its a foreign buyers market and thus the very popular SS sports models such as the GMT and Sub can't be found anywhere on the shelf, and there is a waiting list that's now stupid....
An expected UK price rise has been on the cards now for ages, but as yet, not happened, which may steady the ship so to speak a little, but if the pound keeps crashing it won't ultimately make much difference.
If you want one, without waiting, then you need to be very lucky, or pony up the extra for a 'grey import' from a non-AD supplier.

I'm pretty close with a Norwegian AD who used to get SS Daytonas every 6 weeks when the UK had years of waiting lists. Even they are seeing no SS sports Rolex coming through now. It's nothing to do with Brexit, Rolex have, for whatever reason, stifled supplies. Perhaps their new manuf plant is working acording to plan??
not that it helps you, but when i went to iceland last year they had 2 in stock at the OD and they worked out to about £5100 at the time, soooo tempted , great looking watch. Interestingly they had one in Mexico (River Maya) this week, I spoke to a sales man and he refused to believe that a non date sub was $6090 in the UK and that you get a 20% discount if you take it out of the country so $4872 in equivalent terms. He stated that this was impossible and i was deluded. But with the exchange rate its a fact. There will have to be a big correction on prices as the UK is probably the cheapest place by fair to purchase Rolex watches, my guess is RRP here is lower than dealer cost overseas now

Is it just in Europe they are stifling supply then, as from posts on the Rolex forum from USA/Far East etc. there certainly is no reported lack of supply...?

Company wide? Perhaps they meant within their chain...ie, all watches of switzerland stores. Still, the usual dealer BS as to be expected.
Pretty much everywhere else aside from the UK they are easily available. I have seen several in the past month in ADs, brand new, no markup, and available for purchase there and then - however, they are in $US which would work out worse for you.
They - and subs too- are in short supply in the UK as everyone is hoovering them up due to the very weak pound.

It might go up £600 in Feb as a price rise will have to happen in the U.K. When you look at world prices.
So maybe buying now at overs could be a good move at £6.5k as they will be £6.6k in a few months IMO.
Just think what overs will be like after the price rise !
Yep this is my justification for paying slightly over retail! So maybe buying now at overs could be a good move at £6.5k as they will be £6.6k in a few months IMO.

Grey dealers are going to end up paying more for them so that's one way upwards for their pricing , Rolex will be lifting their U.K. retail prices accordingly to match European pricing , they make more profit , their AD's make a bigger profit per unit and everyone's happy.what are they £7.5k !
