My eldest son is turning 18 in September and we'd like to get him his first "quality" watch. The Budget is 1.5k give or take and I've run a few things past him as I feel he should choose it. Current contenders are the Nomos Club Campus 38 (with open case back) and the Tudor Heritage Ranger. He's keen on something that will look good on a variety of straps and ideally that won't lose too much in the way of value. Any other ideas around this price point new or used?

I'm not a director but I am fairly powerfully built, if carrying a bit too much timber, if that helps smile No goatee either!

I did consider hanging on until his graduation but my lad is interested in watches and he likes the idea (plus we've not got many other ideas on an 18th present).. He's got a cheap as chips Seiko 5 at the moment which he's looked after and likes so I think he will take care of a more expensive watch. 2K seems a decent amount without being crazy and he actually is keen on the Nomos which is half that. A Tudor Ranger on leather is also available for 1.5K. Some of the Oris and Sinn models do look nice and worth checking out too.

He's not that keen on Tag as a brand, other than the Heuer branded stuff (Autavia, Monaco, Monza) which is over budget. With two lots of school fees to pay 2K feels plenty for me smile

We're lucky enough to have some nice watches in the family which our kids will inherit in time but I think it's good to have something given to you specifically that gains it's own history with you (along with dings and scrapes and hopefully not getting lost along the way).

Thanks for all the suggestions on here. He's going to try a few things on this weekend so I'll keep you posted.

The Sinn 104 is a superb watch - in fact, anything by Sinn is well worth a look.
That is a lovely thing. The new limited edition for The Rake looks great too, but sold out straight away!

The Black Bay 41 is on the list too smile I tried one on recently and it has a classic Rolex OP feel to it.. Both the black and blue dial ones are equally smart.

We definitely need to consider some Sinn models. Even with the Autavia reissue currently available on sale for circa 3K the Sinn chronos are great value

My local AD has got a Black Bay GMT in on the NATO too.. Budget creep ahoy up to 2.6K but he's also hanging onto it for us to try. Buying it on the bracelet would probably be better but it's something to consider.

Just got back from an afternoon watch shopping. The budget did creep as predicted and my lad ended up choosing the Tudor GMT on a NATO. He’s chuffed to bits with it and prefers it on a NATO or leather strap to a bracelet (he can always get one later, albeit less cost effectively). Great service from the AD who presented him with a bottle of champagne and an 18th birthday card too. The Ranger ran it close and the Black Bay S&G Chrono they had in was surprisingly nice in the metal too. He also liked the Moonwatch but ultimately preferred the Tudor Pepsi. After checking out a huge amount of watches he came back to Tudor in the end. It’s gone back in the box until his birthday but i’ll get some pics up. Thanks again everyone for all the suggestions.
