Discussion
I understand that Dom Hackett is the go to guy when it comes to watches here on PH, but is there anyone who can commission a one off ring?
When I say one off, the ring was available as part of a collection around 10 years ago, but the designer of the jewellery has since died. The moulds have been destroyed and as they were a very limited run there are none available anywhere for sale. It wasn't a particularly expensive ring, originally being silver, but this time I would like to have it cast in platinum, which I believe would be more difficult. It would weigh approx 35 grams. I may want to make a few slight alterations to the original, but only slight.
Luckily I found some pictures of the ring on an old hard drive recently, so we would have something to work with.
I had thought that I had found someone who could make exactly what I wanted, we discussed price which was fine and I paid up front for the CAD drawings and the mould to be made. The problem is, he is not even close on the basic shape even after a third attempt. I'm quickly losing confidence that he can deliver what I want.
Over to you PH, all help greatly appreciated.

I know a little about jewellery manufacture. Firstly a gold/platinum ring is not going to give the same effect as the silver one in the picture. The tarnishing helps the ring pop and give depth. As platinum doesn't tarnish, you'll loose that effect.
It's going to be very hard for someone to knock up a 3d drawing from a few pics you have of the ring. At the end of the day, it was an artist who designed the ring and as such is a mini sculpture.
The easiest way to get a copy is to borrow a ring, get it 3d scanned then 3d printed in wax which then can be used for casting. Even then, I don't think a 3d scanner will have enough resolution for the details on the original ring.
Starting to think that platinum may not be the ideal metal, but it is my go to for jewellery, mainly because it's not as showy as gold, but you are corrrect regarding the tarnishing and depth. Platinum will tarnish to an extent, but it takes a hell of a long time. I've been wearing the same ring for over twenty years and its more than a little tarnished, but I get your point. It's going to be very hard for someone to knock up a 3d drawing from a few pics you have of the ring. The original ring was made by a designer named Scott Kay as a tribute to his own Dobie, unfortunately Scott died a few years ago and it seems his business is slowly being wound down. If anyone can find the ring in question for sale anywhere, I will gladly pay double.
I have spent days/weeks searching every corner of the internet and have spoken to customer services at Scottkay.com There are none available anywhere. Maybe one day one will pop up for sale somewhere on the net, but for now I'm all out of ideas.
Thanks for the above replies. If anyone believes they can get close to the ring in the above photo, feel free to send me a message. I might want to make a few changes such as a diamond studded collar and sapphires for the eyes, I have been talked out of using rubies. I might just stay with the original design.
I'm just trying to remember a little dog who has left a massive hole in our hearts.

I've been trying to reply to you, but the emails keep bouncing back. Ring size U and for now we'll go with no stones. It's just a matter of getting the ring to look like the photo. I understand it will be more difficult to get the desired finish in platinum, but I'm an awkward hoor.
