A freind asks what causes the P51 to whine during certain manouvers. I thought it was the supercharger, but then Spitfires have the same and sound different. Google dosn't help, half the answers being supercharger and half gunports... does anyone have a definitive answer? Maybe both?

Well I suppose if it goes up and down with rpm it's supercharger, and if it's speed dependent it's gunports. Still not sure though...

Clearly we need to borrow one, tape over the gunports and see if that stops it...

Completely unrelated, but whilst watching Mustangs I stumbled over this:

I like the one on the beach best when all the deck chairs etc are scattered!
6'38" is only a few feet away from being the accidental manouver now called 'a Hunter' redface

Didn't some dive bombers like the Stuka also make a similar noise or have I watched too many old war movies?
They were deliberately fitted with sirens to intimidate.

That is genius. Doesn't explain why EVERY plane in a war movie seems to make that sound when it goes into a dive though. smile
Or why every movie has that clip of early He-111s over Spain...
