Seen in Havana...four fuselage mounted engines....maybe Russian?...no clue....

I remember Angolan TAAG used to fly one out of Jo'burg. Rate of climb lower than an asthmatic window cleaner, and you could still see the smoke belching out the back when it was 100 miles away.

That, and the similar looking VC-10 are wonderful looking planes in my opinion. It's a shame that they aren't around any more.

There used to be one festering away at Banjul in Gambia. I haven't been there recently so don't know if its still there.

I flew into Banjul once; very, very last minute abort "as there is already a plane on the runway". I only expected to get the trots after, not before, arriving, in Africa...

I always liked the Il-62. IT's quite an attractive looking aeroplane - although the VC-10 is nicer.

IL-62 "Lady Agnes" being retired to the Lilienthal collection in Germany in 1989, making it's final landing on a 900m long grass field.

I think the nature of the landing ground is the main culprit in that video. At normal airports, IL-62s behaved OK.

Always thought the tailplane was more elegant on the VC10. The Ilyushin had a longer fuselage but a shorter tail.
An interesting, brief examination of the differences between the two designs...

...and an assertion that, in terms of flight control at least, the Il-62's tail surfaces were the "better" design solution...



...although the Ilyushin design did require the addition of a tail prop with castoring wheels to overcome some challenging CoG issues while loading/unloading fuel, passengers, and baggage.

Perhaps the fitting of a tail prop by Ilyushin wasn't such a bad idea after all...



...and maybe Vickers should have installed one for "emergencies and oversights" wink

Il-62s were quite a common sight at Shannon Airport - both Aeroflot and Cubana examples used to stage through to pick up fuel.

I lucky enough to have made it to Doncaster when the Rada IL62 was in last year. First (and probably only) time I’ve ever seen one.
