The Sea Fury crashed here about 40mins ago.

I was outside when it took off, by the time it was over my house the old girl was coming down fast.

She went in at Limington, took out a few telegraph poles etc.

No idea on the status of the pilot or anyone on the ground as yet.

Crew are confirmed as OK.

Limington is just to the SW of the base, I'm directly South.

It flew over me and didn't sound right - was dropping like a stone too, so assume it's eaten a piston.

Quite likely, yes.

They only flew her back to Yeovilton last week from winter storage/service. frown

I don't think they'll be able to fix her this time.

Navy Wings statement:

Sea Fury T.20

"Navy Wings’ Sea Fury T.20 made a precautionary forced landing in a field next to RNAS Yeovilton following a problem with the engine on a routine training flight this afternoon. Both pilots are safe and well and have been taken to Yeovil district Hospital for a precautionary check-up. The cause is under investigation and both the CAA and Air Accident Investigation Branch have been informed. No further information is available at this time."

It went through a number of telegraph poles, so suspect that accounts for the huge damage.
(And the fact the Lamb & Lark can't take orders for takeaways tonight!)

I was really hoping they might get the Sea Hawk up again, not sure what's required for that, nor the reasons for grounding it in the first place?

Failing that...what are the chances of getting an F4-K signed off by the CAA? hehe

Wonder if it will be used as spares for this one?

Updates are here: https://navywings.org.uk/sea-fury-t-20-update/

Thursday 29 April

Firstly, and most importantly, one member of the aircrew has now been released home and the other aircrew member remained in hospital overnight as a precaution and will be released once Doctors are content. Both have been in contact with and seen by Navy Wings staff.

The site has been secured and visited by various agencies and once the AAIB have been on site tomorrow we will look to recover the aircraft. Plans are underway for that recovery.

We will be putting statements out on the website as we move through the various stages of recovery to keep you all informed.

A few more updates and some pics here:

Tuesday 4 May

The Sea Fury has been recovered to the heritage hangar by the Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Squadron (JARTS) working closely with the Navy Wings team. JARTS were working in the area on a training exercise and provided their expertise and experience to help us recover the aircraft. The aircraft is now secured and we await the next stage of the investigation process to start. Images of the recovery process can be seen below

We are very pleased to confirm that our Sea Fury pilot was discharged from hospital over the weekend and we were delighted to welcome both pilots back to the Navy Wings offices today.

I think the fact the engine is borked is what has really swung it?

Just finished my read through of it...

The final sentence stands out:

"The investigation identified the difficulty maintenance organisations have in accessing
technical information for historic engines, in particular that relating to engine modifications.
The CAA have agreed to meet with the engine manufacturer to discuss whether Modification
Leaflets for the Centaurus XVIII can be made available to maintenance organisations
servicing these engines."

It's a bit of a theme throughout the report: lack of support in terms of access to drawings and specifications?

Lost ranger said:
So the hope is that someone at Rolls Royce can find some paperwork they may have inherited from Bristol Siddeley over 50 years ago?
From the read through, I suspect a lot of documentation is there but purposely withheld for...reasons.

The CAA tend towards the opposite approach here with anything like this in civvie hands... not so much "can do" more "Don't you dare!"
