For any of you burger fanatics out there the US burger chain Five Guys is opening its first UK store this Thursday in Covent Garden. As long as it is identical to the US offerings then it will be a place well worth going to for the fries alone!

The venture is being backed by the guy thats started Carphone Warehouse. I will be going along on Thursday to see whether the concept has transferred properly.

On a related note has anyone been to the Shake Shack that's opened up in london too? I've never heard of it before (never been USA) but the lines are apparently always stupidly long for it.
Its not open yet as far as I know, its only a couple of hundred yards from where Five Guys will be opening this week. I believe it is opening Wed or Friday but I may be wrong. Shake Shack is more about the shakes which are really nothing special IMO but the frozen custard is yummy!

I'll report back!
Is it opening on the same night? Wow they are only a few hundred yards apart!

Today I had a bacon cheeseburger with a few toppings and large cajun fries and according to their nutritional information thats 2482 calories and 39.5g saturated fat against a recommended daily intake of 2500 calories and 30g of saturated fat!

The Soda machine with 100 flavours and free refills is pretty cool. I have never tried Orange Coca Cola before!

Tried both back to back...
Shake shack burgers too fast foody but the rest is good.
5 guys was a lot better and the toppings were nice.
Both were surprisingly expensive and nowhere near meatliqor tastiness
Pretty much my experience. I was not impressed with shake shacks burgers and I do find five guys buns a bit soft and doughy as they dont toast then. The Cajun fries in 5 guys are really good though.

Meatliqor is still better than both.

I was referring to Five Guys, the amount of fries you get is unreal!
Small fries is a holder like McDonald's
Regular fries is that holder plus a large bowl of extra thrown in the bag
Large fried is holder and two large bowls thrown in the bag

A large fries is enough for three average people I would say. I think it's the buns that let five guys down

Sounds a bit like Chipotle, over in the states its a cheap snack, but in the London outlets your lucky to get any change from a £10 if you include a drink.

We have had a Steers, south african firm apparently, opened up recently in Clapham Junction. Service was embarrassingly slow but nice enough burger for the price.
A cheeseburger (2 patties) regular fries and a drink is nudging £15

Noticed today they have finally started selling their hotdogs. Anyone tried one? I was disappointed to see that they are sliced lengthways on the flat griddle so you will get a cooked crisp centre to the dog.

No not gone back after my disappointment at their burgers.

But tried a new place near me a couple of times recently called Dip & Flip, corner of Northcote Rd and Battersea Rise, which I am impressed with. Chunky and tasty burgers served daringly pink although wasn't a fan of the american cheese but the highlight for me is these french dip sandwiches which is just a soft roll packed with a choice of thinly sliced beef, lamb, chicken and currently turkey, nothing else, served with a dipping gravy. lick

Worth a visit it if your south of the river.
Just looked that up. Will give it a try thanks!

Five Guys in the UK have finally started selling the hot dogs as I mentioned on here the other day. Went and tried one today and all I can say is.....

Oh my god they are awful!!!

They taste like a cheap tinned hotdog frank. You know the mechanically recovered chicken kind! They are served in a long bum cut all the way through that make them impossible to eat and the taste of the sausage was just awful. Stick to the burgers!

Really?? I'm back in reading Saturday shopping with other half (god help me) and was going to try one but think I just get the burger.
I wasn't expecting them to be amazing but I also wasn't expecting them to be that shocking. The buns are crap too

i hate it when people put hotdog sausages in a bum.
quite why you'd go to a burger place and get a hot dog i don't understand anyway. it's like ordering chicken at a steak place.
Haha great bit of autocorrect there! I would generally agree but in the US the dogs in 5 guys are a big thing and they didn't launch them over here at the outset to make sure they got them just right apparently!

Im not sure they will do well if they open any further than about 20 miles from London due to the costs. Lots of people going in as pairs buy a large fries to share and one drink to refill as much as they like to lower the cost. I have to say after having been a number of times now I am starting to loath the buns.

But then again I can buy a big burger with fries and a coke for under $10 at Five Guys, and I think that could realistically feed two people, if I was paying the prices they sell them for in the UK my expectations might be higher.
This is the issue. What we are paying £15 for here in the UK is about £7 max in the states.

Thing is its easy to say hey what costs £15 in London is £8 somewhere in the US. Issue is though how does it relate to average earnings?
