I fancied a pretty healthy chicken doner takeaway from a shop a bit out of the way.

They admittedly do a superb kebab. The place is near my parents East London/Essex. The highly miserable dystopian Ilford South..

I was there a few weeks ago and paid £4.90 for a (small) kebab which is the going rate in the area being circa a fiver.

I duly ordered my kebab last night and was asked to pay £6.50. I obviously thought there must be some mistake and said I wanted small not medium or large.

The girl said prices have increased and that she was sorry. I said this was well over a 30% increase! All other prices have gone up.

I can handle 5-10% however 33% is properly taking the pi$$ in my book. It's utterly outrageous in fact.

They might want to read up on the concept of the “Laffer curve”. If KFC et al pulled a stroke like that there would riots on the street!!!

I know the Government are statistical liers and that their figs are shall we say "embellished". I have noticed stuff going up in the UK but this was a real eye opener.

Pret prices are nudging up for instance. Oh well. I suppose we can blame Brexit or suchlike... I hope this is not a sign of things to come..

A fiver is the going rate for a basic small donor in East London! Certainly in the near vicinity.

A 33% hike is simply not on! On principle I will be taking my custom elsewhere! I consider it a bit of a liberty to be honest. They are good but not that good to justify their price ramping.

Nearer to me, this place on Queensway charge £3.50 in a higher expensive area! Plus you can eat as much salad and sauce as you want if you sit in the back area.

This is my point..

Surely anyone only ever buys this crap when they're drunk, so the cost is irrelevant as you're not thinking straight?
A chicken doner/shish is quite healthy

i'm near you OP and i've noticced the same thing. it wasn't long ago i could buy a large kebab for £5 at my locals, now they're £7-8. the quality never improved either. the price of chips hasnt gone up, the price of fried chicken hasnt gone up either. my local chinese takeaways never went up in price either.

even more bizarrely because of the price increase the price difference between a doner and buying a kofte/shish isn't much different (50p-£1)/ before the difference used to be huge/.

really makes you wonder, as a normal 2pc fried chicken meal is £3, and it comes with a drink. it actually makes me want to order a kebab less now. and instead go to the nicer turkish grill restaurant, which is high quality, fresh, tons of sides...and only costs £1 more..
They’re trying it on.

From £4.90 to £6.50 is simply not cricket. However looking from another angle maybe the business is struggling to break even at £4.90.

To me it’s an eye opener. In the big scheme of things of course I can absorb it but 33% is too much.

How many people will stop buying and thus their rise is counterproductive?

For £6.50 I’ll swerve and spend 7 quid and go to a proper Turkish restaurant nearby (Barkingside) and have a balls out blowout. Fresh piping hot Turkish bread in a basket. 2 x dips. A whole plate of food (rice/cous cous/chicken shish/peppers) and be waited on.

Anecdotal, I was in Hounslow a few weeks ago and had an amazing feed for a fiver! It could have fed an army!! A basic “curry cafe”.

I had a large lamb shawarma kebab from taza, it was nice, but the amount of meat was not even the size of what you get for a small shawarma kebab from Stoke Newington Rd (Dalston end).
In Islington the going rate for a small doner kebab is £5 - £6 and a large is £7 - £7.50, around Old Street/Shoreditch expect to pay £0.50p to £1 more.
I agree. Not a great innings in Taza but useful if you want a snack.
