Saucepans !

Need a recommendation for a decent 'top end' brand after having to bin one of my old ones with a hole in it!

I like cooking so something that will last 40 years or so would be ideal since I hate buying 'throwaway' goods.

All I'll add is that if you want long lasting, then non stick is probably best avoided. I've had a few Tefal and Circulon stuff and even the 'Guaranteed lifetime non stick and they don't last, even if you do keep them away from the dishwasher. I think you might want a decent set of copper pans?

Stellar are pretty good for fairly sensible prices. My mother bought me a set as a housewarming present 15 years ago and they're still in perfect condition except the one lid which my wife left sat on a gas ring and scorched the seal on the handle.

This is perhaps the most un-PH post I have ever made, but 20 years ago when I was, let's say, newly single, I bought a set of 4 stainless steel pans from Wilko. They have survived having both of my teenage/early 20s boys living with me (and cooking for themselves) for a while and are still going very strong today, in daily use. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them at all.

I think the set cost me £15.....

I know you said "top end" but we have Ikea 365+ full stainless steel pans. Been using for 5 years and as good as new..They now do small parcel delivery so maybe you can order one and see if its any good..

Le Pentole used to be very good (Stainless Steel) but I'm sure you could get similar quality, if not quite so aesthetically presented, at your local catering supplier much cheaper.

5 years ago when we bought our first house, I went out to Sainsbury's and bought a 3 peice copper saucepan set. They've lasted with heavy use, including the wife not knowing how to boil and egg, left the pan on full blast on the hob, burned the pan dry and the egg started popping.

So if they can withstand that, they can withstand anything. And I think they still sell them too!

Nisbets (the catering supplier) pans will stand a lifetime of abuse, otherwise I've got a couple of GoCook pans from Tesco and they've been great. TKmaxx is also good if you know what you're looking for.

Hang them up for all to see.
Buy a set of Stainless pans from Ikea/Wilkinsons which will last 15 - 20 years. Keep them in a cupboard when not in use. Use Steel Wool to clean any burns.

ProCook do a couple of ranges with 25 year guarantees.

We have a full compliment of Procook Pans for our induction hob. On the whole they have been brilliant apart from our small frying pan suffered from a wonky base. Took it back to the Procook shop and they replaced it no questions asked.

Le Creuset is over priced low tech tat for the same folk who like an AGA and Elizabeth David cook books.

All ours are either cracked, lost their enamel (acid fruits do it) or are quietly rusting in the cupboard.

Hateful things.

Le Creuset don't just make tradional cast iron stuff, they also make some nice stainless steel pans too. They're exensive but well made. However I have some John Lewis own brand stainless steel pans of about the same age and they're lasting well too despite being about 50% of the price. Only problem is JL seem to have dropped that range!
