You've got some friends round who have varying musical taste, you put an album on that works for everyone that means it won't be Aja, Dark Side Of The Moon or Court And Spark so it has to be Rumours, brilliant album, brilliantly recorded and caters for everyone.
Rumours imho the greatest album ever made, the staple diet of every classic gold radio station but still it fails to not impress even after all these years.

Going to sound harsh(no pun intended) but as recording goes all the Beatles albums sound dated but because the late 70s and early 80s recording was at it's pinnacle a lot of the albums released then sound great then in the mid 80s a lot of studios bought SSL consoles which made everything sound tinny and fake. Good comparision being Follow You Follow Me by Genesis on a Trident console compared to Invisible Touch recorded on an SSL, but to be fair that tinny sound with lots of reverb was all the rage in the 80s only now do we realise that the sound quality of the late 70s albums is far superior.
Check out a film called Sound City well worth a watch.

Never mind the sound quality, listen to the music.
I wasn't dissing the Beatles and the music they made with the equipment that was available to them in the studio was second to none.

Dave Grohl rescuing the Neve desk? Was discussing this just the other night. Most famously, Nevermind was recorded on that desk & I'd certainly put that record in my top ten.
Great film.

They had their own studio called Polar, I know they ended up with a Harrison console in there (same make that Thriller was recorded through in Westlake studio along with using a lot of Neve pre-amps) and Led Zeppelin recorded In Through The Out Door there, Genesis also recorded Duke there.

Oooo now there's an interesting choice. ACDC's best, certainly.
Great album 'Gone Shootin' is a blast but I was more thinking about albums that cater for everyone.

Hard to argue against Rumours.
Dire Straits Making Movies is a good listen still

Good shout.
The Power Station Studios(now called Avatar Studios) around that 79/80 time, all those great Chic records + the album We Are Family by Sister Sledge + The River by Springsteen + Making Movies. You could say the Power Station was on a roll. All recorded through their Neve 8068.

Lots of people seem to be listing their 'favourites', which wasn't the point of the OP.

I have to say, Rumours ticks a lot of boxes.

I'm exactly the right age to have a copy on vinyl, but FM never really registered musically with me, so I've only had a copy (on CD) for a couple of years.

I think it IS a great candidate for the best "sit around drinking after eating" album ever.

Whilst I, personally, would rather have London Calling blaring in my ears, I wouldn't expect a mixed group of people to all feel the same.

Rumours is unlikely to offend anyone acoustically.

Probably NOT the "best album ever", but a good choice to put on in mixed company... which does sound faintly damning, doesn't it? biggrin

You get exactly where I'm coming from, if I'm getting selfish it's either Minute By Minute by the Doobie's or Aja.

As stated earlier, 'Sgt Pepper' was the fave album in the Sunday Times list.
June 1st is the 50th anniversary of it's release.

I've read that 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Penny Lane' were due to be on the album but due to pressure for a new single they were dropped.

What two tracks could have been dropped to make room? My choice, ' Within you and Without you', 'When I'm 64'.
They could have got rid of A Day In The Life and included an early take of Obla Dee Obla Dar as well as Strawberry and Penny Lane

I listened to Dark Side of the Moon while driving home from London yesterday. That album takes a lot of beating.
Before I see your answer I thought it's gonna be Straight Shooter or Desolation Angels with your name.

Whilst not being my personal "Best Ever" it does tick the boxes in terms of "universal appeal" IMHO.

Quality musicians.
Steve Gadd
Michael McDonald
Victor Feldman
Jeff Porcaro
Tom Scott
etc...

Not forgetting a beautiful collection of perfectly crafted songs, of course.
What a staggeringly good call, sir. You are to be applauded. clap In fact I'm listening to it as I type this.

Its very hard to top that but here is my input.

Contenders.

ABC - Lexicon Of Love.

Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Forest Fire.

David Bowie - Station To Station.

The band who's name must not be spoken - Love Over Gold.

Prefab Sprout - Steve Mcqueen

Eg & Alice - 24 Years of Hunger.

The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The bks

Paul Simon - Graceland

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk

Podium

3.) Parallel Lines - Blondie

2.) Bellybutton - Jellyfish

Winner!

Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded.

And thanks spyder_dryver for getting me to listen Miss Jones tonight. In my current mood "Company" has nearly moved me to tears. cry
Some good calls here, love the first Rickie lee album but Pirates edges it imho, Steve Mcqueen by Prefab Sprout (just how good is that track Bonny?) Tusk (Sara one of the great songs) and Walking Wounded is an absolute gem along with the album Temperamental.

In your opinion. That's the point? The whole thing is subjective.
