I'm currently without a 4x4 after selling my Defender before C-19, but I would like to do a 4x4 trip in September through Wales.

I set a budget of up to 5k for a well sorted Discovery TD5, but prices have gone mad and I refuse to spend north of 5k for a Disco 2. I've been to look at a few and the chassis' were all rotten, but covered in waxoil (badly) to hide it. I used to pick these up for dirt cheap not even that long ago, and fail to see how people can be asking 8k for these now. Mental.

As an alternative solution, can anyone recommend a 4x4 hire company? I'd like to hire a Defender, or really anything that is capable of driving Strata Florida. My reasoning for hiring a car is, I don't have to faff around with selling it after a trip, which can be a real ballache (as we all know).

I'm not expecting this to be a cheap alternative idea, but for the convenience, I'm happy to pay extra to make my life less stressful (I hate selling cars).

Thanks all
NG

I suggest you have a look at Jeep Grand Cherokees. 2002-2005 diesel can be had for £2-3k. At least as good as a Disco TD5.
Good suggestion, I'll have a look. Thanks.

I’ve used The Out a few times to rent new defenders (90 or 110s). Good service but you’d be getting a shiny new car on road tyres. The road tyres are apparently pretty capable (see Harry’s Garage reviews). But not sure it’s exactly what you’re looking for.

Alternatively, turo often has older generation defenders and Discos. But again, they’re not renting specifically for you to take it off-road.

Probably obvious, but Insurance is going to be your nemesis on the above suggestions. Make sure whatever you do it covers off road use.
Thanks for the reply.

Turns out the trip has been cancelled. My mate who I was going with has decided to sell his much loved Series 3.

Bit of a shame really, but I'm sure I can convince him to buy a stbox 4x4 for a weekend of fun.
