Unfortunatly there isnt a jeep forum so ill have to ask in here if thats ok.
Found myself a 1998 2.5 cherokee for a decent price, guy wants 695, ill probs get a little off if i can. Its got mot til nov and tax til may so thats all good. Guy says its in good condition, only a chip in the windscreen and a broken bonnet release but that it still works. Otherwise it seems solid from the pictures/description.
Its done 102k which isnt huge milage for one of these, and if i can get a look at service histor ill be happy. Now id like a few pointers as to what to keep an eye out for if i do go look at it? I had one as a rental, same 2.5 engine an manual box, and tbh, it was awsome, drove it like a stole it, including off roading and it was fine
Im more then happy with the offraod perfromance, especially like the low range selector and the fact you can put it in 2wd if you like.
What are they like to run longterm, and whats the mpg like driving sensibly on normal roads? I didnt have it long enough to work it out, but i can remember it was better then the 20ish mpg i get from the impreza atm
Lastly what can be done in the way of engine mods if i decide i need more power further down the line? I know theres the 4 litre I6 engine that likes to drink fuel, but if i was going to bother with an engine swap id like to drop something in like a big v8 and still be able to keep the 4wd box with lowrange if possible. Im not too keep on massive tyres and raising it loads, the standard setup did amazingly well on nowmal road tyres, id probably look at just some nice road/offraod combi tyres.
The one area i would like to know about is can i get shielding for the underneeath, as a couple of times going over hills in fields it scraped the bottom, and i really dont want to rip the sump open or tear the gearbox/diffs to bits.
