Hi all,

Have seen there are a few of you who are doing road/targa rallys, so I thought it would be good to have somewhere to discuss where and how we're going, and where noobs like myself can ask silly questions.

So to start, whats usually the first event of the year? Hopefully the car will be ready by then...

That pic of you sliding has me sold on a mx5! was due to pick up a standard renault 19 this weekend but it was too far away and listed incorrectly.
But man maths has led me to believe i can get the mx5, sell my tf and i will still have a convertible and gain a car that I can rally!

Oh blimey talk about jumping in at the deep end!.
You do realise the Preston has the reputation for being the toughest Rally in the country on the poor little car don't you... And I mean toughest Rally, that's including any stage event, it's much much rougher.

Good luck, assuming you make it round I expect you will have an enormous grin all night!.
Well let's hope the £200 micra is up to the task! nuts
Next jobs are to get her protected, sort the brakes and fit some rally car bits!
Oh yeah, and for my friend and I need to learn how to navigate....time to consult some guides and do some 12 cars

I think the silence speaks for itself hehe

I have managed to source some Hella Rallye 2000 Spotlights for cheap, now these measure 225mm in overall diameter, but the bluebook says:

So...are they legal or not? I find the language used there confusing...

Guess it does make sense, bit of a dick move by the MSA to make rallye 3000 (222mm) legal but not rallye 2000 (225mm), I'll have to give them back.

We have sourced some dunlop knobblies (sp82 if I recall) for cheap so atleast we will have traction whilst we're lost and falling apart...

Gutted I missed the devils own, friend said it's the best rally he's done.

Micra is coming on slowly, managed to buy a literal shed load of wheels and tyres for £100 today, and oh yeah, another micra for £100 too!

Question: some of the gravel tyres aren't e marked, some say "for rally use" and a few say for "competition use only".. As I understand it tyres don't need e marking to be road legal, so where do I stand in using them for the preston?

Cheers Wingo, we managed to get 15 tyres, 11 of them with micra steels on on ebay for £100, 5 of them are brand new M+S tyres which look ideal if we can use the gravel tyres, two new maxsport hakka 2 tyres also in there, but look abit aggressive and soft for our uses...

Sadly not doing the bonfire targa this weekend, still haven't got any under body protection or navigation equipment! So we're doing an autosolo at Curborough on the Sunday to give the car a shakedown!

Just over a month until The Preston and all we've done is fit seats and harnesses, fixed the brakes and serviced it. Lots to do!

This sounds absolutely incredible stuff!

Have been wanting to buy an absolute shed for a while to learn car mechanics and always thought that it would be nice to race it somewhere/somehow. This sounds right up my street!

Would definitely be interesting to see all your builds to give guys like me or anyone else interested in getting involved an idea. Certainly sounds to be a very accessible form of motorsport for the every-man on somewhat of a budget.
Well I've got a phone with a decent camera now and some actual lighting in the workshop so who knows a build thread might be on its way!

I'm sure others can direct you to existing build threads too.

So how did it go lads?. I see two Micra’s on the entry list, one finished ( an acheivement in itself,) the other went missing in action.
We finished! (with hundreds of penalties for ignoring the code boards and without doing two sections as we got very stuck towards the end)

Extremely rough in parts and great fun in others, amazing night!
Car was brilliant despite its lack of prep: managed to take us there, smash around suffolk and take us home again, with the only casualties being the exhaust mid section (still missing) and the spotlight steadies.

Well worth the entry fee, now to rebuild her better for the next rally thumbup

Will have to see, think we are taking a month or two out to take a break and get the car sorted, the weeks leading up the Preston were very full on trying to get the car prepped around work/life. And I haven't touched my mountain bike since buying the micra!

Doing the sums it looks like the little micra owes us £550 in its current state, entry to the Preston was £150 and fuel for the weekend cost us £70. Insurance is £360 for the year and includes unlimited road rally cover, so all in all a very cheap way to spend 8 hours at night feeling like Richard Burns! (minus the talent and speed) Looking forward to some targas where the co-driver is less important though ;-) (hes slowly starting to understand everything)

If we had more money right now i think we would have started with something already prepared like This I'd recommend anyone looking to start road rallying to get something like that, with the cage etc its definitely cheaper in the long run, and the top 3 cars at this years Preston were MG Zr/Rover 25!

Has anyone got a list of targa events for 2018 please?

We are looking for events to improve our tests performance in historic road rally events which are south of UK preferably.

Thanks

Richardracer
Go type of event 'rallying' then 'targa' Hopefully this is filled up soon after the clubs members meetings, but the two Bath MC ones appear to be right up your street

I won't be driving this one sadly but still should be fun. Hopefully we can squeeze in some 12 cars before then too.

Full Targa rally calendar for 2018

Hows everyone's prep going?

Just bought a cage and looking for 4 point harnesses for the micra (noticed after signing up to the festival targa that we need these!) Just fixed the exhaust (with a section of bed frame hehe) and hoping it passes its mot on Friday!

Underside of the car post-preston, only way to identify that is the driveshafts coming out!

The Preston has tests on private land and road sections, although marked map.

It will also destroy your car!

I'm unsure if the Bath MC Festival targa has road navigation, but theres definitely road sections between tests..

Anyone else doing the Bramley targa this weekend?
Just managed to squeeze in through the reserve list, micra is sporting fresh tyres, sump and wishbones and I'm very excited!

Shame the trailer isn't ready, going to be a long day driving to Surrey and back..

Fantastic day yesterday, despite the horrible journey down from Coventry.

A few driver and navigator errors, and finally an exhaust failure in my last test cost me any chance of a decent result, but I'm very happy with 3rd fastest overall in one of the tests with a 1l micra with no performance mods! (apart from the incredible maxsports). Mate I was sharing with was driving well too, in the top 20 OA before the car borked.

The organisation and routes were excellent considering it was the first running (May have to fix the Preston-esque connecting routes for next year though wink ), probably the best use of £45 I've ever done.

Time to fix the micra (again) for the next one!
