We've got the cage mount for ours and had it on the harness bar for our first event last month but unfortunately it sits so low you can't see the track very well at all from the camera so another solution is needed.

Are the windscreen mounts acceptable at all? Or would some kind of suction mount on the bonnet be better and would it actually stay on?!

Unlike normal GoPro extensions the top and bottom are in the same orientation as each other, so much better for this purpose. I use the middle length one and it works just as I'd hoped, changes the view just the right amount without any noticeable vibration.
