I don’t think that I have ever seen a Ford Puma 1700 on the hillclimb circuit. They have their own circuit class, are they not competitive on the hills for some reason ?

Most events seem to have classes split <1400, <2000 and >2000cc.

I'm sure I've seen a Racing Puma competing, and they aren't too far off the power of the popular 2-litre Clios in that class.

Some clubs run a 1800/2600cc split which it would fit nicely into (a friend sprints a 325i Compact under those rules).
That’s what I thought. There are lots of Clio’s competing at Gurston Down in the Roadgoing up to 2000 class. I thought I might have a go in a Puma next year, however I’ve never seen one on the hills so reasoned that they were uncompetitive. There are loads of good ones around for under £2,500.

There was a Ford Puma at Gurston in August 2019, running in the SBD H.S.A. Hillclimb Championship.

Thanks for the info. The Puma times compare well with the MX5’s ,which was my other choice.

Which events would you most want to do??
I fancy doing a season at Gursdon Down in the road going, under 2litre class, and to drive there and back in the car. I tried it a couple of years ago in my Porsche 968. It’s a very heavy car, and being 3litre was uncompetitive in its class. I just want some cheap motorsport, but don’t want to finish stone last !!!

Your profile doesn't say where you are but I assume you're south if you're talking about Gurston.

As another option, I run the Bristol Motor Club MX5 Challenge which is a championship that is designed to keep costs sensible by preventing people spending a fortune with the engine mod arms race.
Buy an mk2 MX5, fit some coil overs on it and compete. The championship covers 4 Autosolos, 4 Sprints and 4 Hill Climbs (albeit two weekends at the same venue). You don't have to do all the rounds and just 7 rounds count towards the championship.

We're also officially the only motorsport championship that can be settled with Roshambo as a tie-breaker wink

www.mx5challenge.co.uk

Last years rounds were:
Date Event
23rd March 2019 Great Western Sprint, Castle Combe
7th April 2019 Kemble Autosolo
11th May 2019 Llandow Sprin
19th May 2019 Westonzoyland Autosolo
8th June 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb
9th June 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb
21st July 2019 Clay Pigeon Sprint
27th July 2019 Dick Mayo Sprint, Castle Combe
4th August 2019 Kemble Autosolo
15th September 2019 Westonzoyland Autosolo
28th September 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb
29th September 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb
That’s very interesting, however I’m on the Hampshire/Berkshire border so it’s a bit further than I’d ideally like to travel, however I might visit Castle Coombe next year to have a look at your sprint day.
