Let's have another one!

What are you all up to this year on the Targa / Road Rallying scene?

For me - I purchased the Mini that we used as course car on the Saltire and brought it south from Aberdeen to Carshalton. It's getting ready for the 2022 season, first event will be a 12 Car Rally (Basingstoke MC's Steve Partridge Memorial on 11th Feb) then hopefully the Harlequin 12 Car (Farnborough & DMC - 25th Feb) and Bramley Targa Rally (Farnborough & DMC - 13th March). After that, we shall see!

A small modification in the boot, so that I can carry 2 x full size spare wheels, but also quickly convert back into a child-friendly car.

And I've sourced a pair of classic Lucas 20-20 spotlamps, so I've making brackets to suit (cardboard mock up shown!).

Over to you!

First 12 Car done!

First 6 sections no problems, dropped the odd minute here and there but otherwise fine.

Then the killer navigation - we couldn't solve one section and went OTL - so did 6 or 7 other crews so we don't feel bad.

The Mini was excellent, really enjoyed hustling it through the lanes.

Next up:

Farnborough & DMC's Harlequin 12 Car in 2 weeks - I've done that one before and it's a cracker.

Hopefully I'll have time to wire up the spotlights I have now mounted.

That section caused everyone a headache, dropped some time on that one. Was a good event though.
Sure was!

My entry is in for the Harlequin 12 Car next Friday, taking a complete beginner as a Navigator - so marked maps to get him started.....

A successful 12 Car Rally (run by Farnborough & District Motor Club) on Friday evening, The Harlequin.

I took on board a complete beginner navigator, and FDMC's beginner class is a "marked-map" job. He did a great job, despite feeling a bit queasy we got round just dropping 15 mins (max lateness is 30 mins). We missed a few code boards, perhaps the odd wrong turn and maybe I drove right past some without spotting.....even so we were 2nd in the Beginner class and very happy.

There was lots of mud and standing water on the route, even though it was "all yellows". Remarkably good roads for navigational rallies down in the over-populated south, well done to the Route Liaison Officers for keeping the sport alive and the residents happy(we barely saw any non-rally traffic on the back roads).

A wee sample of the map handout and a gratuitous shot of the Mini at the finish pub!

Next up - Bramley Targa on 13th March.

Had a great run out on the Hexham Historic/John Robson Rally a couple of weekends back, all night Road Rally with 50 cars. I was in the Historic section in a Triumph 2000, after a superb tustle with a Volvo PV we came in first overall in the Historics and equivalent of 16th across the whole field, not bad against a field of mainly modern cars in a 50 year old saloon.

It was pretty intense stuff, the first section after Petrol, was plot and bash and timed at just under an hour, I wont tell you what distance it was!. Only one car cleaned it and they were 4 minutes ahead of anyone else. We dropped 13 minutes, passed about ten of the moderns in that section.

Tour of Cheshire next weekend in a Renault 5, daylight Historic, so a very different challenge.
Well done, that's a great result.

Was the hour long P&B section a continuous section for that length? Was it regularity? Cheers

We competed on the Bramley Targa Rally yesterday, organised (excellently) by Farnborough & DMC. This comprised 6 tests of approx 1.6 miles each, round Bramley Camp (Army training area in Hampshire). The road surface was a mix of tarmac, concrete, mud, moss, leaves, puddles etc - a real challenge. I struggled to get used to the Mini's handling on the variable grip, so I suffered quite a fews spins, overshoots and hit a few cones.

Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time!

Was wondering if anyone can tell me the rules on targa cars regarding stickers that aren't advertising? For example say on these 2 what's allowed and what's not
Well......

The stripes etc on both cars are permitted as long as it's day time (Blue Book R.18.6.6 )

As for signwriting - R.18.6.6. also defines the amount of advertising permitted on Targa Road Rallies in daytime to be 1250 sq.cm in total.

I would say it's down to the judgement of the scrutineer to define what is advertising and what isn't. My opinion would be that makes & model names are OK, but company names (e.g. DTV, fordrallyesport) might not be.

For other technical reasons, the Chevette might not be permitted, I *think* it would have to be in the road-going spec (or which only a few HSRs were made), and only be allowed if the event had a parallel Historic permit - because it's a twin cam / 16v / 2 x twin 48carbs and they ain't allowed on Targa rallies.

Nice pics, though Jesus it looks like the grip levels were greasy and low, that horrible damp sheen and all the tarmac packed with mud and moss, looks like an invitation to understeer off into some scenery at every opportunity.
A very accurate description! There were 2 or 3 event-ending offs, and we had two big moments when I overestimated the grip.... a couple more to show the surfaces:

Good luck on the Shaw Trophy, let us know how you get on.

That's a great write up 28Hodge, many thanks. Yes as mentioned above, venues are very tricky.

I've been involved with organising the Mull Targa in the past, the first year we had a variety of private owners and the relationships w.r.t. damage and repairs were complex. Subsequently we used almost exclusively Forestry Commission roads - although there is significantly more paperwork involved, and you need to be with them a year ahead, once the permit is signed off, everything is clear.

As for competing, I had entered a Bexley LCC 12 car rally this Friday and was looking forward to driving in Kent for the first time. But I've come down with Covid so have to stay home for a few days.

Anyone have a link to the targa car regulations for 2022 been hearing of different little changes to them thanks in advance
Here you go - you need Section R.18 (technical regulations for Road Rallies) from page 320. The red bits are revised for 2022.

Good luck!

I'm out driving on the Chin Memorial 20/20 Navigational Rally on Saturday night, first time competing in Kent. By reputation the rallies there are fun but challenging, so we are in for a night of it. 80odd miles and up to 20 controls!

Now this was an excellent rally - like I predicted it was non-stop, especially for the navigator... pretty decent roads for driving too, down in Kent.

As Non-Experts, we got all the navigation and control map refs on our start minute, so Chas managed to plot about a section ahead at each time control. He could then read the roads to me, just as well as I think I would have struggled to keep on time (and indeed on the road) if it had been blind. As it was, we missed 2 codes and dropped 8 minutes, placing us 11th o/a and 2nd in Class.

Wee pic from the evening:

Now that I've nearly got Mull out of my system, it's time to get back into the 12 Cars.

The Weald MC Championship has already started on 7 Oct - I missed the first round but will be driving on the second round this Friday - which is Croydon & District MC. The plan is to do the rest of the series with Chas Davies on the maps, we will marshal the last round and see how the points go.

Looking ahead, I'm marshalling on the London to Brighton Veteran Run so will miss the Rushmoor Targa, I'm hoping to also do the Christmas Targa at STANTA on 28 Dec, and potentially this tough-looking event....

Do plenty of people do these events in 100% stock cars?
In 12 car rallies - yes probably half the field, most of the result depends on the navigator, and not the car nor driver. One of the most successful guys uses a Skoda Superb estate.

A lot of folk make some subtle modifications to help strength and reliability (sump guards, better suspension and brake pads etc) and spotlights are a big help. I have used a Volvo XC70, a Suzuki Ignis and a Mini Cooper 5dr (all totally standard) in the past. Now I've got a Mini Cooper R50 which has some preps - raised suspension, sumpguard, Koni shocks, spotlights...

For Targa rallies yes it is possible, there are always a few bog standard cars, but they are often a little tougher on the car. If you have a car already I'm sure many would offer advice on suitability and recommended mods.

A wee post-Mull Rally poem:

It's gone five days since we crossed the line
I really should be feeling fine
Everything hurts from my hair to my shoes
I've really got the post-Mull Blues
The only way to cure this pain
Is to get back in a car again
No, not Mull, and not so far
I'll be driving the Mini in a local 12 car

It was the Croydon & District MC's 12 car rally, starting at Westerham (Kent) and finishing at Godstone (Surrey). 50 miles, most roads were soaking wet and covered in leaves, so it was a challenge for both driver and navigator.

We finished 3rd expert and 6th overall (they combine classes for results there) which was good. Got all the route checks but spent a few minutes up the wrong road twice.

And they had an official photographer!

Did a 12 car last Friday, great route around mid Devon. Full entry, loads of marshalls, great route.

Annoyingly, I missed an LWR early on so we got hit with a big penalty. Clean other than that and dropping 3 minutes on the final plot and bash section, despite a wrong slot that I'd earned the driver about.

Can't wait for the Exmoor on Saturday, only just up the road from home so a relaxed start to the day.
Good luck on Exmoor, one day I'll venture that far south west for an event!

Back to it this Friday with a Southsea Motor Club 12 car, way down near Portsmouth. Great roads and usually great organisation down there.

3rd place on the Southsea MC 12 car last night, a tough 65 mile route. Two sections of nav caused us some challenges, so we missed 3 code boards, got one wrong direction approach at a control, and had to cut and run one section (i.e. opening the clue envelope early and finding the control map ref).

The best bit, for anyone that knows Goodwood, was a complex route around the gravely viewpoint car park at the top of the racecourse.

I've started recording the routes on Strava, so we can spot where we went wrong.

All great fun!

A couple of weekends off now, the next is Sevenoaks & DMC on 18 Nov.
