looks like my first engine start is quickly approaching, a few small fabrication jobs left to do and a few more sensors to connect to the Megasquirt and should be good to go

It’s an LS1 4.8 twin turbo which I built with quite a few mods, most of the fabrication has been done by myself (exhausts, intake, dry sump and water meth tanks) running Megaquirt MS3 Ultimate staged injection (16 injectors) boost and traction control

What turbos are you running again? Sorry I can’t remember.

Can’t wait to see the final dunk numbers for this car. Should make stack of power. smile

Is it an iron or ally block? Have you thought about getting a ally 5.3 block? Any reason why not? They run the same bore I think. The 4.8s just run a shorter stroke (I think and could be wrong).
Turbo's are Holset HX35, 120mm Twin Scroll housing, should start boosting around 2800rpm
Its an Iron block got a great deal from Summit Racing for a new block and at the time when I researched Iron vs Aluminium I read quit a few posts saying that at around 800hp the liners become unstable so iron it was, 4.8 uses shorter stroke crankshaft than 5.3 but same bore, changed the reluctor wheel to a 58 tooth, decided to go with shorter stroke for the extra rpm potential it provides, figured that the motor wont be struggling for HP or Torque. Took a while to sort out forged rods and pistons as I wanted to use flat top pistons not dished, research went on and on until I got there

I think I will stay with the iron block at $350 for a brand new finished honed block is unbelievable (+tax and shipping) and if I wanted the car lighter I could always look in the mirror, quite a lot to loose there. Turbos are good for 600hp each and I wouldn’t want to rev past 7500rpm although internals fitted could probably go higher

OP, how come you wanted flat top pistons? Are you running them at deck height or down the bore?
Didn't want the extra weight of the dish in the pistons and thought the squish would be better with the flat top, running at deck height compression is 8.9 to 1.

Can't believe it, motor started on fist attempt admittedly running quite rich but Megasquirt started to autotune that down a bit before I had to shut down. Had a couple of small fuel leaks from the fuel rails and an oil leak from the turbo return but over the moon its all working. Alot of tuning ahead to get it running nice but sounds awesome.
After I sort that, its engine out and get the body ordered, I'm being drawn to the dark grey with gold wheels, it will be nice to get back to ordering parts and installing them rather than custom fabrications all the time

Been held up for some time, after engine start found out that the alternator wasn't working so after a bit of research decided on an uprated version from Mechman and it just happens that the 240 amp billet polished one wire LS version was on offer. It has just arrived and looks great, shame it won't be seen in the engine bay. All I need to do now is change out the battery wiring for 335amp cable and check to see if I need a shorter belt as it uses a smaller pulley, we will see

And a little bit of welding, charge cooler feed pipe just needs cutting to length and a screw tip welding on, alternator needs new mount making as the mounting holes are slightly different, hopefully by the end of next week I will be back where I started with a running engine ready to continue tuning

And the alternator is in, just the tensioner to make and it’s done, new battery cable and fittings should be with me Wednesday .

Thank you
I'm working on the chargecooler pipe work at the moment and have remade the Ultima heater bypass assembly as I am unhappy with the fit in the engine compartment and because my installation has the pipe work routed to the rear and into a gearbox oil laminova cooler/heater and re routes to the opposite side of the engine bay back to the bypass assembly. Picture is off the new assembly

I will see if I can post a video over the holidays but I doubt It will be today’s attempt, I will be to busy watching all readings to sort it and will probably need a 7 year old to show me how to upload the video

Started engine yesterday with the intention for sorting out a bit of cold start and idle tuning but ran into a problem, engine sounds like it has broken a spring I have had a quick look in the rocker covers and can't see anything broken so have decided to remove the engine and investigate further, what a pain

Valve train looks as it should, roller rockers all good,no obvious spring breakages, need to rotate engine and check the compressed springs to see if any are loose at TDC. Can’t see anything at the moment, will have another go after New Years party.

Need to rotate engine to find out which cylinders valve train is loose, could be a lifter, Johnson short travel hydraulic ( had 2 x new that were collapsed). From the noise it was making I thought it would be an obvious spot.
Thanks for the replys

Just done a couple of rotations of each bank and checked all rockers and springs, no broken springs or clearance between rocker to valve, the only thing I can find is slightly less preload on the inlets with no3 easily the worst , all the exhausts are good so its looking like a lifter problem on cylinder 3 inlet. I spent a lot of time making sure all the lifter pre loads were correct as there is a very small window for preload with the short travel lifters (engine has 4 different pushrod lengths to achieve this) and this is not how they were originally so looks like I will be stripping more. Maybe the lifters not pumping up.

Haven’t remeasured the preloads again only from what I can feel at the tip of the roller rocker, can’t remember what the preload was but was set to lifter recommendations. When they were set there wasn’t the movement that is in cylinder 3 inlet, engine was running for 2 mins max up to 2k rpm maybe it needed more time and now I know nothing is broken I should reassemble and try again

Started the engine this morning, new oil and filter, noise still there until about 2k rpm and then disappeared and ran quietly again so looks like it was a lifter not pumping up. Next problem was loss of engine sync and engine cut out, looks like I have disturbed something looking for the tapping noise so that's tomorrows job sorted and if I can find it quickly maybe a bit off tuning in the afternoon.

Almost finished the exhaust tips, just need to be cut to length, a couple of clamps and a polish

Sorted the sync problem, engine running but loud tapping is back and won't clear with rpm, engine is running smooth almost constant rpm at idle but the sound seems to speeding up and slowing down in a rhythmical fashion almost like a belt or pulley is hitting something but nothing touching, Seems to be coming from top end/ front of the engine. Engine out this time
