I bought one of the last 1080p LG 50” plasmas and I’m sitting here watching it now. I’ve seen so many other OLED TVs and they look clinical, horrible by comparison. Anyone else enjoying old technology?

I bought my 37" Plasma from der on here (Digital Direct) back in 2008, still using it and the surround sound system today.

I'm pondering what to replace it with, it's been a brilliant TV and not had any issues.

What i paid at the time. biggrin

Panasonic TH-37PX80B 1 £564
Pioneer DCS-370 1 £188.70

The sound on the old plasmas TV was never that good, I've always used a suround sound system fed by a fibre optic link from the sky box.

There are different specs of LG panels and processors.

You can get a last year C1 55" unit for your budget, the current year C2 55" is about £1400, the C2 has a faster processor and a brighter display and seems to get very good reviews for that budget range.

The largest CRT TV was 43" display diagonal. Weighed about 200Kg. biggrin

I have a 55" Panasonic plasma - the last model they ever released, regarded as the best plasma ever as the Kuro IP was integrated.

I also have a 65" LG C series OLED 2021 model.

On the same SD and HD sources, the OLED is better IMO. Both are stunning pictures, but the OLED edges it. On a "modern" 4K/HDR source, it is obviously a step up again.
I’ve got the P50VT50B, which I guess is the 50” version of your 55” screen.

One of the things I don’t like about 4K and a lot of modern screens is that when you put them in a room, the image is sharper and more clearly defined than anything else in the room. Unnaturally so, to my eyes. I really like the “lifelike-ness” of the plasma.

Just to update this, i have just bought the C2 55" version, it arrives on Saturday (i could have had it tomorrow if i was going to be in). I've had my plasma 37" for 15 years, so i expect this will look massive. eek

I bought it from AO, it's the same price as everywhere else at £1399, but there is a £100 off code you can apply. Strangely i got the £100 code when i looked using my phone and chrome, using my laptop it only offered £20 off, but even ordering via my laptop and using the code from my phone it worked OK. So some saving there at the moment to be had using AO.com

I did what, you say?

Yes, I’m a bot. Isn’t it obvious from the style of that post? Clearly bot-generated. Us bots love watching television. Especially the HD stuff. That’s the real sweet spot for our cameras. Maybe because they’re HD. Hopefully when mine gets upgraded to 4K I’ll appreciate 4K displays better.

As you’re apparently unaware, the forums have a weird little wrinkle which can generate double posts. I’m not entirely sure how, but I think it’s caused by posting on a phone or tablet and leaving the browser window open, then coming back to that window. The coming back to it generates the second post. I haven’t had the energy to play around to find out precisely the mechanism though, because I’m too busy with my other bot-jobs.

So there you go. Consider yourself better educated. And because I’m a bot I won’t even send you a bill. But even us bots sure do appreciate the occasion “sorry” and “thank you”.

Cars, tellies, appliances, whatever, people bang on about how much cheaper and greener modern replacements are but never stop to think about the financial and ecological cost to change.
Err, plenty do.

That doesn't detract from my observation though. There is immense pressure to upgrade to something "greener" with no thought given to the cost of creating the new thing and the cost of safely disposing of the old thing.
Err, yes there is.

What do you want? People to never buy anything new and the resultant economic crash that would follow?

I've had my current TV the longest I've ever owned one, 15 years, I've owned my current car 13 years. Plenty of people do consider every aspect of our purchase choices.

Stop being a miserable git. This thread is about TV's, not your warped view on how other people think.

My new OLED LGC2 arrived yesterday late afternoon, so got it up and running and started to work through what needs what etc.

So far really impressed with it. I've got it setup to my Sky Q UHD box and using my 2008 spec combined surround sound system and DVD player using the SKY box optical audio out to provide sound.

Looking at info online, some UHD content doesn't work fully on the SKY platform, like on BBC iplayer, but does via the smart apps on the TV, so I've set that up on the TV app and have ordered a 3 in 1 out optical audio splitter box, so can use the TV optical out audio when using the TV apps to provide sound.

As the TV is much bigger than previous, 37" plasma to 55" OLED i can see the low definition quality issues more, but that seems more down to the quality of the filming at the time, rather than the TV type itself. For example watching Kiley on BBC2 HD last night biggrin her early song footage on TOTP was crap compared to her late stuff.

HDR is amazing on this TV.

I didn't say that, she asked if it has a resale value, they dont. The samsung deal seems a good one, you'll do well to get £40 for an old plasma now, shipping is a none starter too.

one of things I've noticed about watching OLED TVs, is they seem to lose the cinematography of the older screens - it looks like you're watching the movie being filmed, rather than the movie itself. I find it quite odd. Is this the "soap opera" effect?
