got a new tv on a very good offer the other day and can only see one audio out port, and it's optical. trouble is, my surround system is fairly old, and has no optical in port. it's fine for all things scart, since i can put the yellow video cable running into the tv, and the red/white cables running in to one of the 3 or 4 audio in ports for the surround sound. kit is a technics one like this http://static.boards.ie/data/50/technics_stereo.JP...

but as said, it must be about 7 years old by now. is there any way to get them linked some how when using hdmi stuff like ps3/blu ray player? optical out and dual phono are different signals so can't imagine there being a cable with optical one end and dual phono the other....? it's half tempting to buy a cheap speaker system, as it will still be better than the tv speakers of course.

thanks in advance guys!

What TV is it? Analogue audio out is usually available from one or more of the scart connectors (unless its an LG), simply connect a scart-phono adapter into AV1 on the TV then set the switch on the adapter to 'OUT' and run a red/white phono cable from the scart-phono adapter to your amp and job done.
If its an LG then they dont have the monitor audio function available on the scart so your buggered there.
hi,

thanks for the reply mate. tv is a samsung. trouble is i think when you have the input to HDMI, then it takes the audio from there too, and i don't think you can choose to have it through a scart port. i'll try and have a better look later or tomorrow though. i don't think there is a switch to make the scart in port into scart out (so you can have the audio leave through the phono cables) but i don't know! think it's this tv

but will double check later

with the best will in the world, the OP's question doesn't make much sense - he talks about attaching some cheap speakers so presumeably must be thinking of using the stereo RCA audio outs for those.
sorry if i was unclear. what i mean is:

i want to use my old but expensive hi-fi system for my sound when using my tv, whether it be through scart or HDMI inputs. the tv does not (i've double checked) have dual phono audio out, only digital/optical out. the hi-fi system does not has optical in. i said i can run scart connections with video to the tv, and the phono to the hi-fi system, although that is not the ideal way of having it all running to the tv, then the sound from the tv to the speaker system. i mentioned cheap speakers because i said i could just buy a cheap-ish speaker system with an optical in port. but now i have found a digital to analogue/dual phono converter, so i think i will buy that and have an optical cable running from the optical out port on my tv, to the optical in port of the converter, then dual phono running from the out port of the converter with those cables then running in to the audio in ports on my hi fi system. clear smile i hope so!

thanks for all the replies guys, i've double checked in the manual and this is the only way i think i can do it, i can't see any way of making the scart/AV1 sockets into an OUT port for audio whilst using HDMI inputs. double checking in the manual (which always comes second hehe ) suggests the only way to hook up external speakers is through optical out. it does say though that the tv only puts out 2 channel audio, so it would probably be better to run the optical audio cable from something like the PS3, and after the converter having it run straight into the speaker system, as the system is 5.1 surround sound.

man that was a long winded post!!
