Fantastic/Beautiful moments in Cinema - The PH Compendium
Discussion
Rules:
1) It has to be a moment, we're talking 5 seconds maximum
2) You have to describe it here, but not drone on about it
3) You can't rubbish another man's moment. Comment on it, but no opinionated "You're wrong" stuff.
4) No Nick Cage films are allowed, my thread my rules
Starter:
Andy Dufrusne emerges in the pouring rain from the sewerage tunnel into a filthy ditch, having spent a night crawling in darkness. But for him this is paradise because he has finally escaped from Shawshank. The thunder rolls and the lightning flashes and the clean rain washes the the years of dirt away..
Fin.

Great responses guys, keep them coming.
And remember you can use the Spoiler button liberally if you don't want to ruin a moment.
I'm throwing in:
The moment in Pulp Fiction when John Travolta's character accidentally shoots young Marvin in the face in the back of their car, totally out of the blue and wonderfully comic yet brutal. In a way that only Tarantino can do.
.....
followed about 10 minutes later (hey it's my thread I'm having two moments) by the immortal line "Let's not start sucking each others dicks quite yet....." from Harvey Keitel.

The whole speech in Scent of a Woman, but if I'm allowd 5 seconds I'll take "There was a time I could see. And I have seen. Kids like these - younger than these, with their arms torn out, legs ripped off. But there is nothing like the sight of an amputated spirit. There is, no prosthetic for that.
Also Good will hunting: "But you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistene chapel"
Amelie: - "Qinze"
If we're allowed music videos-
Pearl Jam do the evolution: Horses run towards a thicket of trees and tanks roll out
Metallica S&M: "Take a look to the sky just before you die, it's the last time you will [lights go out] will.. will... [lights explode back up for the next verse]
Beyonce live at Glastonbury - If I were a boy:
Just after the Alanis Morrissette break and she's crouched down, the camera's close in on her face "You're just a boy, baby you don't understand..." On that line there's the face of a woman putting fking everything into that performance.
Yes, that is an embarassing thing for a metal fan to say.
If you bring music videos into it, I'd put forward Fix You by Coldplay. There is a moment towards the end of the song where he's at the piano and the (stadium) crowd start singing resulting in him trying to stifle a massive grin. we're not having music.
stay on target, stay on target
Arnie strides over to the bushes which are still swaying after the departure of the monster they cannot see. A flourescent green liquid drops lazily down, leaf on leaf.
" If it bleeds, we can kill it."
I love that whole film, but moment when the tide turns and they realise they might have shot at this extra-terestial beast is a good one for me..

Right, I'm swinging back in here with a controversial one....
John Hannah said:
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Wow.
My thread from 2011, nice revival !
I'll go away and think of some more, because so many great films in the 8 years since I started this !

Interstellar (2014)
Cooper (McConaughey) sits through the stored video messages from his family at home; realising that in the hours he has been off the spacecraft, 23 years has passed on Earth and he has missed out on his young family's entire childhood, and he will never see them again.
Shot from a 3rd person perspective with McConaughey looking down the camera.
No father (perhaps no human with a pulse) can watch that without it stirring the soul. Nolan is a cinematic genius
Edited: Ok spookily whilst I was typing this, Legend83 has submitted the same scene! Great minds !

The end of Back to the Future when Marty sees Doc get shot for the 2nd time by the Libyan terrorists and seeing him grieving while Doc calmly gets up revealing he wore a bullet proof vest and tells Marty that he put the letter back together and took the necessary precautions.
