When we have had previous threads about WW1 and WW2 war films, the usual stuff has been mentioned, The Dambusters, Das Boot, Battle of Britain, The Cruel Sea etc, all excellent films, but how about some mention of off beat or lesser known films with a war theme...

Such as:-

Carve her name with pride
Hangmen also die (Fritz Lang 1942.... The assassination of SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich)
Angels one five
San Demetrio, London
The Tin Drum
Went the day well?
The Halfway House (1944)
The Wooden Horse
Green for Danger

Any recommendations?

Ice Cold in Alex.

A bit dated but I like the conceit.

ETA: Kelly's Heroes. I love that film.

'The Hill' from 1965 with Sean Connery, Harry Andrews, Ian Bannen, Roy Kinear and Ian Hendry, about a British POW camp for insubordinate British soldiers. Well worth a look....

I know "A Canterbury Tale" is very highly regarded, but I've seen it several times and don't "get" the appeal.

What's so special about it? (I really like the opening scene with the Spitfire)

San Demetrio is a great film.

Of it's time and cheaply made with dogy model shots but a good cast and story..

We owe a huge debt to the men from the Merchant Navy.

Sailing across the stormy freezing Atlantic in a rusty tub full of petrol waiting to be torpedoed took a special courage.
