TV licence

My friend has paid his license for 40 years . Currently by quarterly DD.
He absolutely does not want to pay it any more .
If he stops the DD will he get anything more than letters and e mails ?

Has anyone had experience of what happens.

Have you ever had people round asking to inspect any TV equipment you have to confirm you don't watch live TV or I player ?
