''The most British of British cars may no longer be a British car...
Markus Duesmann, the head of purchasing for BMW, made the announcement during the week that the company are "extremely concerned that the Brexit talks have been so piecemeal and slow so far."

The second largest manufacturer of luxury vehicles in the world, BMW produce the Rolls Royce models in their British plants, and combined with other vehicle models, result in £2.4 (€2.7) billion in exports each year.

However, Duesmann said in an interview (via Bloomberg) that: "We’re already revising the logistics channels for the U.K., so that we’ll be able to manage the coming border, whichever duties will be in place in the end."

This is due to Britain's exit from the EU, which will most likely result in tariffs and other trade barriers being imposed on its cars and parts, which in turn will hike up the manufacturing and exporting costs of the vehicles.

A direct response to this will be to move the car-making plants abroad - quite possibly Munich, where the BMW headquarters is based - which will then see the Rolls Royce cars manufactured entirely in Germany.''

Looking good huh?!!!

BMW don't own the Rolls Royce name, they lease it.

I understand that part of the lease agreement is that it must be produced in the UK.
''Under Tuesday's agreement, BMW will pay £40 million to Rolls-Royce for the trademark; lease the brand name through the year 2002 to Volkswagen and continue to supply parts. Beginning in 2003, BMW will take control of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, while Volkswagen will become the owner of Bentley Motor Cars Ltd. and the Crewe factory. That plant will continue to turn out the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph for BMW, however, during that model's lifetime.'' nytimes

Today - all the panels etc - are made in Germany - and shipped to UK for assembly.
That's not correct.

Today, the full body is supplied from Germany, fully assembled. It's painted in Goodwood and bumpers and (German made) doors, bonnet, boot are hung.

Engine and power train is also supplied direct from Germany with only minor assy required.. Goodwood is just final assembly of parts largely made in Germany. Even the engineering is done in Munich.
So t's a bit like the Hillman KDK supplied to the Middle East way back.
i had no idea that was already taking place. in that case, its costing cash shipping it all over. writing on the wall - brexit or no brexit for transferring production. seriously, why wouldn't you?

I think the point of all this 'yippering' (New word right there) is being missed.

The real craftmanship, essence and magic of RR is performed in the Goodwood works in the Sussex countryside, and is something peculiarly British that can not be recreated anywhere else. Same as things such as Saville Row, all the way through to village green cricket.

It's something we have always been good at and the embodiment of Britishness, it can not be simply be lifted and shifted. It would be a foolish move to erase that facet of which the RR brand stands for.
Of course it can be shifted!! Some Arab/Chinese billionaire won't give a jot where his RR is made.

I think you might be surprised.
Agreed. It doesn't matter where your Ford Transit is made, but when shelling out big money for something that is no better than mass produced offerings the back story is everything.
Maybe goodwood will become a pretend construction site with the real ones made in Germany smile

Seriously,

how reliable are Rolls Royce act the moment? if they were made in Germany can we suspect they would mechanise the process of production a lot more?
