And one of his dates ends up dead.

A man who was on trial over the death of his date in a speedboat accident is in hiding after being found guilty of manslaughter. Web designer Jack Shepherd had been trying to impress 24-year-old Charlotte Brown after meeting her on dating website OkCupid. But their champagne-fuelled first date ended in tragedy when his boat capsized on the Thames in December 2015 and she was thrown into the cold river.

Jack Shepherd was extremely frank with police about why he kept a speedboat – "to pull women", he told them.

After he had let Charlotte Brown take the controls of the boat at the end of their fatal date, he told officers that he "thought it might impress her".

"A web designer convicted of killing his date in a speedboat crash on the Thames has been granted leave to appeal his conviction – despite being on the run.

Jack Shepherd, 30, has been in hiding since he was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence after the death of 24-year-old Charlotte Brown."

Meanwhile the tax payer is footing his legal bill.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6451561/S...

Almost £100k and counting.

It's right that defendants who can't afford their own legal team at a criminal trial get legal aid however legal aid whilst on the run? How can anyone justify that. Sticks two fingers up to the system and to the family of the deceased yet still wants to use the same system to his advantage when it suits him.

Unsurprisingly, turns out the Daily Mail story doesn't have much of a connection to reality.

These are the solicitors defending him - https://www.tuckerssolicitors.com/response-to-the-... .
They received £30k in legal aid, not nearly £100k and 95% of the work was done before he absconded. Including the grant of leave to appeal.
The Mail took the story from the Sun. here’s the original Sun piece.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/7877697/boat-killer-...

The solicitors who have responded are responding to something which hasn’t even been said - no one said they got the full £100k.

“A Freedom of Information request reveals he got £50,642 towards crown court solicitors’ fees, and £42,650 went to Stephen Vullo QC, who was in contact with Shepherd throughout the trial.”

I know it’s in the Sun but Is the above paragraph really inaccurate?

It would seem that he has form for not co-operating with the judicial system. This extract from 6 months ago.

Shepherd is also wanted by police for failing to attend court over another unrelated matter.

Think it relates to this case.

“Jack Shepherd could escape justice for glassing a barman two years after killing his date Charlotte Brown on the Thames.

The thug launched a vicious attack on David Beech in March last year, around the time he went on the run from justice for killing his date while showing off in his speedboat.

He was charged with grievous bodily harm for glassing the barman at the White Hart Hotel in Dartmoor, near his mother’s house. But prosecutors apparently felt he had been sufficiently punished with his six-year jail term for killing Miss Brown, 24.”

His stupid Ewan McGregor beard doesn't do him any favours.

He doesn't come across as a particularly likeable person in this video interview, he seems to have this idea that the woman's Dad doesn't like him, funny that!
His comments about the woman’s Dad were very strange.

“ I feel at risk from him and his power in the prison system” - wtf!

Charlotte Brown's father works in the prison system of the UK, he's a civil servant of some influence.

The CPS [Crown Prosecution Service] decided not to prosecute me but he appealed this. He was able to leverage his power in the system to get a QC appointed to oversee the case, which was very unusual.'

'The father met with the Home Secretary in the UK and this is testament to the fact he has some kind of leverage within the system.

'It's also why there has been so much press coverage in the UK. I've only spoken to him once but he took the opportunity to tell me I would have a very bad time in prison.

'I said, 'I'm so sorry Graham' but he didn't want to hear it and hung up. I feel at risk from him and his power in the prison system, and that's the reason I ran away. I blamed myself at the time and said I was very drunk and driving too fast, but an assessment of the facts shows we were actually going below the speed limit. I'm very, very frightened about what might happen, but it seemed like this is the right thing to do. I hope justice will prevail and my appeal will be successful.'

who is paying for all the legal costs in Georgia? He has defence lawyers working against the extradition which can't be cheap.
His lawyer in Georgia says he’s paying her out of his own pocket.

“Ms Kublashvili, also known for trying to become a Martini girl and defending a man believed to have had links to IS, has insisted she is not being paid with British legal aid cash and that Shepherd is paying her privately.”

But of course he’s still getting legal aid in this country.

Well quite, thanks for pointing that out, which actually helps my point I think, here's one in the correct Georgia
I think we'll all agree this is several orders of magnitude worse than the UK, which is what I was pointing out before:

That photo is 15+ years old. They've since refurbished the prison.

A typical cell now:
