As we've seen 2 similar accidents in a fairly new model, with a limited number produced. Will we see a withdrawal from service until the cause is known?

To those in the know.

Would you be concerned if your next trip was on one of these? Or wouldn't you give it a second thought?

I would happily. Airlines and aircrews all know about the problems now and have taken steps to mitigate against it. It’s not difficult to resolve in flight if you’re aware of it as everyone is now.
What are they doing? A bit of tape over the lawn dart switch!

So the solution is going to be a rushed out software patch?

Hope that doesn't introduce worse or new problems!
Until the cause is confirmed, you can't be confident of a fix.

Also a rumour I heard today (so I wont vouch for it's veracity) that American pilots have known about this issue for months and their procedure was "if anything went wrong, turn off everything and fly manually" and that the FAA haven't approved a software update because of the shutdown earlier this year (erm... but they've had 2 months since then).

Given my experience, rushed out software updates create more problems than they solve.
All 737 max operators have known about this issue for a few months because after the first max crash Boeing released this bulletin (back in November) about the event and what to do.

For such a serious issue it looks like a very "matter of fact" document.
