NHS Nurse asks Strangers for Donations
Discussion
No, not that sort.
NHS nurse so poor she can't support daughter, 10, asks strangers for donations
Is there more than meets the eye with this?
Where is the father of the child? Or at least, his contribution to her welfare.

Sarah said her take home pay a month is £2,000 before she forks out £670 for rent, around £600 for childcare and £579 for travel.
She went on: "My basic outgoings (rent, travel to work and childcare) are equal to my monthly wages.

Hmmmm,
No mention of Benefits (UC). Surely a single mum would get some sort of assistance.
No mention of having to go to foodbanks - as onerous as that is, I would expect her to have mentioned that.
No mention of grandparents or the father.
Too much not included in the article.
Also, £579 on transport?

I'm sure this comment will be shot down but, back in the last century there were people called a 'husband' although towards the end of the C20th they became 'partners'. The normal procedure when embarking on lifes' great adventure was for a lass to acquire one or the other and certainly not to start a family before the security of house and home was assured.
I don't know the circumstances of this nurse, and frankly can't be bothered to invest time finding out, but she is one of millions of young ladies who have the 'want it all and want it now' mentality that social norms back in the dark ages prevented, including the so-called shotgun weddings.
I shan't be donating!

600 on travel ...move a bit closer
Does seem a bit much but we don't know the circumstances. That would be my first thought though, get somewhere within walking distance.Sad state of affairs though that a qualified professional would probably be better off on the dole - no rent, not travel expense, no childcare fees.

£579 sounds suspiciously like a car finance amount to me, ie £279 for car, £300 for fuel/insurance/tax.
Or it could easily be the cost of a monthly rail ticket in to London and parking at the station. I earn less than she does and have two kids and a mortgage to keep up and I wouldn't say I'm on the breadline by any measure.
I imagine childcare could be expensive because the nurses i know have to do night shifts as well as day shifts, so getting someone to stay with kids overnight could be tricky.
Her travel costs are a lot more than the price of a monthly travelcard - most curious......
If this is factually straight then it kind of illustrates how the capital has become a bit stupid in terms of affordability.
Someone working in the financial sector - or a PH Director obvs - will have no difficulty but how do teachers, nurses, police, fire and ambulance crews manage? Let alone everybody else not making enough cash even for a st flat in Feltham.
The article suggests she may be a cardiac nurse at UCL which is prob pretty prestigious so I get why she wants to work there.
And the suggestion she go private isnt that clever, a bit more cash perhaps but variable hours and worse employment terms.
Still smells a little though
Cheers
