This is good and it should really put the north on the map. In general there isn't much to do around there so this is really good for the northern people to go and watch the House of Lords, LIVE!

Would be interesting to see the economic impact

795 lords.

  • A big building with €100m's of construction, upkeep, etc. Short term local +ve to economy
  • They don't visit every day, and I'm guessing York would force many to stay overnight. So a direct upside to an already buoyant hotel market. The Grand would probably be commandeered...
  • Upside to local spend - lunch, dinners, bars
  • Multiplying effect from lobbyists, etc visiting the Lords
  • 450 staff reference and all of their salaries would be spent locally. Not everyone would relocate, so some local (skilled) job creation
etc
So why not do it somewhere which would actually properly benefit the area? York is already relatively affluent. This wont make a huge difference to the local economy as it would in somewhere like Bradford for example.
