13% of population, dominates social media, hates Britain
Discussion
Interesting read.

Essentially it splits the nation down into types, tribes if you like, eg Progressive Activists, Civic Pragmatists, Disengaged Battlers, Established Liberals, Loyal Nationals, Disengaged Traditionalists, Backbone Conservatives.
Progressive Activists, 13% of population, utterly dominant on social media, as Goodwin summarises on Twitter

Fascinating look at Britain's "progressive left"
13% of population
middle-aged & well-off
Guardian + Channel 4
prioritise inequality & climate
anti-Brexit
focused on historic injustice
most likely to shout on social media
least proud of being British
Plenty more food for thought in the download, all 268 pages of it. amongst other things it really does demonstrate why Twitter etc is just not representative of society as a whole.13% of population
middle-aged & well-off

anti-Brexit

most likely to shout on social media

If Biggy never got shot, we "Could've Spread Love the Brooklyn Way". Instead we have that tit Stormzy. Who is basically a manifestation of metro-liberal angst.
Of course if you put on "What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down" by Public Enemy (2020), the middle class noses get all squiffy. 13% of the country are wkers.

Very similar in the US - same guys you reference generated a similar report.

The extremes of each side, sub 10% of each end of the left<->right continuum dominate social media and generate most of the content.
This deranges the conversation as it pulls people away from the centre.
It's a worrying trend that threatens to make the "public square" complete unrepresentative of the majority.

Well worth familiarising yourselves with Tristan Harris, formerly an ethicist at Google who quit when he realised the damage social media is doing.
I like PH, the debate, the car stuff, the crazy things on NP&E etc, I am early 40s white male professional, married kids etc. I don't use face book, twitter, Instagram etc, i decided after the last election I will no longer vote (an I voted Tory and Brexit).
I like Adidas, Underamour, Gshock, Panasonic TVs I use amazon and shop at the supermarket that is nearest to me.
Social media has almost zero impact on my thoughts or actions. Most of the things I do have not changed in 20 years.
I think worrying about what some melt says on twitter is pointless. It only affects you if you look for it.
Edit. I also knew someone who has a huge Instagram following etc 700k people look at her posts. She is a fitness model an sells her workouts etc via her SM pages. Thing was we went to the same gym, an what she did in the gym to look as she does v her workouts were miles apart. SM is a window into how people want the world to be but not really how the world truly is.

I've actually noticed this for a long while. On FB I have lefty friends and they post incredible amounts of political stuff - some of it is simply raving and raging - some profiles seem to exist to just post fifty links a day to Guardian articles, oh-so-funny anti-Tory memes.
I also note that in every case their profile is "public" (despite many of them being in IT) just so as many people as possible can read the bilge they repost. That graph is correct.
The conservative types rarely post anything of a political nature at all.
Oh - and as per the OP - not one of these leftie ranters is working class or from a working class background.

But this is why everyone is in so much shock. I like Adidas, Underamour, Gshock, Panasonic TVs I use amazon and shop at the supermarket that is nearest to me.

If you read social media, twitter you would have thought Brexit was some crazy mad idea that only a few were considering.
Then the shock that they won!!!
If you read social media, twitter you would have thought Trump winning was some crazy mad idea that only a few were considering.
Then the shock that he won!!!
Many who live their lives online only see what the sad few who also live their lives online are thinking, they just don't get they are a minority.
The problem is this small percentage have an inability to listen to other people's views, and this is their downfall.
The fact of the matter is, many people just ignore the bickering online, many ignore most of the media, many strangley just vote for people they think they can relate to more.

You've just described PH NP&E to a tee ;-)The problem is this small percentage have an inability to listen to other people's views, and this is their downfall.

I agree. But I don't see why anyone gets excited about the issue. The vexation I hear on PH about Facebook or Twitter confuses me. You only have the friends you want on FB and see the things you want to see on Twitter. Nobody sees everything on Twitter so does it matter if x% say this or that?Randy Winkman said:

I'm not sure you realise how these social media platforms work, there's a few good documentaries on Social Media on Netflix, you certainly do not only see what you want to see on SM.It’s the ‘squeezed middle ‘ that will suffer. Retired public sector progressives can shout from thier ivory towers. Profess to speak for minorities and lower income individuals despite not truly knowing those people or how they live. Only meet immigrants when they get their Volvo washed. The people who find themselves at the bottom end of society, the more mouthy types spend most of thier time wanting more money off the ‘tories’ because it requires no skill to ask for more. Media class stir it up because it keeps them in a job. A hell of a lot of self employed sit somewhere in the middle and have no time for virtue signalling

Unfortunately the algo has "realised" that things that create fear, anxiety and anger are the most likely to be viewed and shared.
It basically exploits our natural tendencies to pay more attention to things that could affect us negatively.
Crude example, but think about you as a caveman. There's a beautiful flower right in front of you, and a predator in the distance. You're gonna keep your eye on the predator rather than the flower because the predator can kill you if you take your eye off it.
Someone else mentioned the Social Dilemma documentary on NetFlix, Tristan Harris - the guy in the video I put above - is behind this film and it describes how social media is designed to exploit psychology and maximise time on site.
Learn the phrase "attention economy". That's now the main resource of the internet, your attention and how that gets monetised.
