Innocent 10y old boy though. What has the world come to

What would possess someone to keep such a thing?

This has really affected me. Probably because I have an innocent 7 year old and really dread anything like this happening to him.

Parents and wider family (not sure if there are any siblings) must be in bits. Poor souls. God give them solace at this awful time.

some are not reported

I remember putting some a few stitches in a patient in A&E who worked as a vet's assistant. She was in the park and a dog bit her. She did not want to report the incident to save any trouble for the dog who she described as being excited to see her.

Bonkers

Breeding needs to be properly regulated - partly because of incidents like this, but mostly for animal welfare and health reasons. Unregulated amateur/backyard breeders shouldn't be a thing.
yep

every birth and death of livestock needs to be registered with defra but no such rules for dogs? Seems mad given the risks these vicious dogs represent.

This is the key point. Our Labrador is as soft as butter, has been brought up around small children, is well trained & obedient and has never so much as bared his teeth at a human.

I wouldn't leave him alone with a child for a second
presumably because child cannot defend themselves? But an adult being attacked would be okay? Genuine question

IMO, dogs need to be under the control of their adult owner all the time. When outside, they should be on a lead in spaces that are shared with other humans. If there are defined spaces for dogs to run free, they should only run free in those defined spaces. Other humans can then choose not to go to those places. There should be zero free running in spaces shared with humans.

It is fking selfish of dog owners to allow their dogs to run up to strangers. As we all agree, dogs can be unpredictable and so why are they free to run up to unfamiliar people that they can be unpredictable with?

Nation of dog loving fking morons.

I’ve scanned this thread, and having 7 dogs and having owned 15 feel reasonably qualified to comment. Two of those dogs were over 10 stone and in some countries banned.

After seeing the beaming face of that little chap this week, and even being one of the biggest dog fans on the planet I’d accept tough restrictions. I can’t remember which county but breeds that are typically over 5 stone are banned.

Id happily accept that if it stopped another incident as we’ve seen this week. People could still be injured by small to medium sized dogs, but the chance of death would be far far limited.

And all of this “product of its environment” stuff, probably comes from folk who’ve never really had experience of powerful breeds, or been bitten properly.

I can tell you now from my own experience accidents can and do happen even when a dog is playing, a dog that is on the button command wise.

You can imagine that feeling of a set of mole grips puncturing your flesh.

That was from a five stone bull dog playing on a tug rope, I dread to think what that poor little chap went through.

Good God

I take it the puncture missed an artery then and take it you realise how lucky you are?
