Is anyone planning on stepping back from the daily grind after COVID?

I’ve always been quite career oriented, but the longer this drags on, I’m starting to think more about early retirement, picking up small bits of consulting, or maybe a complete career change. Even though I’m not exactly loving how we live now, I can’t be bothered going back to how things were.

Most of my friends seem to be thinking along the same lines. I know a lot of IT contractors facing the triple whammy of COVID, IR35 and Brexit. I think a lot of them are going to do something completely different and less stressful rather than go permie.

I know a few other people talking seriously about leaving London. If they get out with their equity in tact I can see them moving to a really different way of life. Working long hours for a big mortgage with a long commute feels soooo 2019.

The obvious challenge is finances, but with millions of people seeing how little you need to live on, there must be an awful lot of people in similar positions wondering whether to bin it all off early.

Great to hear people seeing the light and stepping off the gas. Hope we don’t all go back to what we were doing when COVID clears.

Funny how IT becomes such a slog 10-15 years in. The cycle of learning new technologies and dealing with the corporate politics wears really thin. Supporting all the crap legacy technology. Constant trend towards outsourcing and offshoring, declining rates etc. After having a good run for over a decade, sod that for a game of soldiers much longer.

Sorry to bounce my own thread, but I wondered how people were feeling on the work front right now?

Since Covid started I’ve gone from competitive workaholic to completely losing interest. It all feels a bit empty, being on zoom calls all day is st, I realised how little I need, and I care less about status.

The thought of ever getting up at 6.30am 5 days a week, schlepping into the office and being in meetings all day is completely alien and I don’t see myself doing it again.

I’m thinking about early retirement or switching to something simple like airport runs to cover living expenses. A big step and change in outlook for me but maybe a good one.

I wondered if anyone else finding themselves in a similar mindset the more this goes on?
