For anyone who is interested I am starting an outdoor swimming pool instillation tomorrow, to be completed in 3 weeks.

A fellow PHer is making this possible, I managed to obtain (at stupid expense) an 11m x 4m shell of very high quality (including an electric slatted solar cover that can take 100kg of weight) with Roman style steps and additional lighting added before transit.

It will arrive on Wednesday and the ground will be broken tomorrow. The pool will be put into place (hopefully) next Monday. Then the filling and back filling will start whilst the plumbing and electricity is finished. After that there is the landscaping, which is pretty much paving slabs and however much my wife can spend on loungers, furniture and plants without me noticing!

I aim to post a photo story here for anyone interested in this. I did the same on AVForum a few years ago when I did a cinema build in 1 week. If anyone wants to see that give me a shout and I'll re-post here.

Photos below of how it looks right now...

The canes are marking out where the pool will be.

Cheers

I have no idea (other than the basics). I understand the basic physics of in-filling and back-filling. Also the pipe-work. But am handing it over to a fellow PHer who has forgotten more than I remember!

The next photo's will go up tomorrow.

Thanks all:

- The tree house is being relocated - my daughter was very strict on that!

- Good idea re the time lapse filming John, are you volunteering!

- Heating is a mixture of a high end slatted solar cover, an air source pump and an in line electric heater (we can't get gas into position in time).

- I'll post development pics every day there is something to show.

- Link to the home cinema build is here:

https://www.avforums.com/threads/small-14-x-10-hom...

It was 5 years ago, hence the choice of some equipment looking dated now even though it was relatively high end at the time.

Cheers!

To be honest, I have lost track of whether this is a carbon fibre ceramic or stainless steel structured shell (I have been through so many) but they are all GRP bonded on the outside. I'll check and get back.

It is going to be c. £100k all in, the PHer is Lrdisco (and he has a very nice LR Disco!) and he certainly knows his stuff.

I'll shortly post a photo of the cleared and marked out area - ready for excavation tomorrow morning.

How much use do you expect to get out of it ?
I can't see the point of an outdoor pool given our weather.
A hot tub is a different matter though smile
Think of this as a swimming pool in summer and a bloody massive hot tub in winter!

On those (rare) summer weeks where you want to cool down in a pool you can. When it is snowing in winter you can sit in toasty water with what looks like steam rising out of the pool (it is, of course, actually condensed money!).

Out of interest what is stupid expense and who is the PHer, looking at a similar project myself, please private mail me if you would rather not say in public.
Good luck with it.
Sorry, I forgot to say that if you don't put yourself under the same stupid time constraints as I had to, you can do the same build for less that £100k.

Edited to say the shell was £60k - that being the stupid expense as with more time I could have had a larger concrete pool installed.

Lovely bit of topsoil. I hope it's going to good use somewhere!
The contractor said the same - really good quality and we are having to dump it. He needs some for another project and says he will have to pay for something nowhere near as good!

Anyone in the Nottingham area wanting free top soil needs to get in touch quickly!

  • Edited for stupid typo!

Am I missing something? Why wouldn't he pay you less than what he's paying for it?

Excellent project though - following with interest! Unlike normal build threads that last 5 years this one should pay off quickly hehe
The cost of transporting it on a 300 mile round journey wouldn't stack up, I guess.

Great thread, I look forward to reading the updates.

Out of interest (and as someone who has no idea about pool maintenance), are leaves/needles from the tree(s) going to be a pain when it comes to keeping the pool clean?
Thank you very much!

We are going to cur the trees back but they are not bad and the pool has an electric slatted cover, so that will help a lot.

Looking good, and that top soil does look good. Any idea what was on the site before your house?
The house is about 150 years old, so no idea! It believe it has been both bigger and smaller than it currently stands. I'd love to find out more but it is quite difficult.
