Safety Type Loft Hatch Door

Yesterday, having a new wireless router to install, I needed to enter the loft to reset the CCTV settings. Having completed the same, I exited the loft, pushing up the loft hatch door, only for the hatch door to come crashing down, causing me sever facial injuries.

Never realised before just how dangerous these loft hatches doors can be. My loft hatch has the standard loft catch, are there any safety type catches about, or even a soft controlled closing type, similar to a toilet, or fire door closure type about.

Would a barrel lock not be an easy fix?

Our loft hatch door suddenly swung down once, smashing the wife in the face as she walked under it. I just wish I had witnessed it. Ive since lubricated the latch in the hope it will happen again.

The latch on ours isn't particularly robust, but the whole door is sprung, so it only opens a few inches under its own weight. Works well as the ladder is wood and must weigh quite a bit.

A gas strut might work. Like you get in a car boot.

Mine has a chain on it as well, hatch only drops down a few inches, then you have to un-hook the chain to lower it down.
