'Recyling centres' aka tips
Discussion
Was just checking the opening times of my local tip, and read:
'What you cannot bring to recycling centres:
Asbestos
Chemicals and other toxic substances
Clinical waste
Dead animals
DIY waste including hardcore, plasterboard, tiles, bathroom and kitchen units and doors
Fireworks, ammunition and explosives
Fuel
Gas cylinders
Hazardous waste
Japanese knotweed
Landlord's waste
Pesticides
Poisons
Trade or commercial waste'
So apart from garden waste, which I pay extra for anyway, what CAN I dispose of? When I re-did my bathroom and kitchen 10 years ago I was able to get rid of all the wreckage at the tip, no problem. That is what tips are for. Where would I get rid of it now? And then they complain that fly-tipping is on the increase!

Mine now is only open on certain days, one of which isn't my mid week day off; I'd loaded my car up, driven down there to find that they are no longer open on a Tuesday, so I had to find an alternative tip location to dump off my crap, which entailed an additional hour and a half out of my day!

Restrictions similar to ours too - however from April 1st they brought in charges for DIY waste (by fixed qtys) however it's still cheaper than a skip for limited stuff 'What you cannot bring to recycling centres:

This easter I started redoing my bathroom. Metal bath, sink, loads of tiling hanging onto plasterboard that came down, in back of the car.
Took to Brent refuse tip. Refused entry. Flat out refused, even though my flat is in brent, I pay st loads of council tax, and I'm a teacher not a builder. I had to drive off (unless I wanted to pay commercial waste cost by going on the weigh bridge). I wonder where all that waste in brent therefore goes by otherwise law-abiding types

I have been re doing my kitchen so I went down to my local one with 3 plastic tubs of smashed off tiles, and old radiator and a decorative wood basket with fake flowers which I was junking. They were quite happy to take away the basket to resell and make themselves some money but wanted to charge me £1.50 or something like that per bucket. I didn't have any money anyway so just bucked one bucket a week in my bin.

You wouldn't be able to do that here. You can only dump in your borough and have to have proof of address.I’ve just redone our kitchen and have a full Hippo Skip (the biggest one they do) awaiting collection at £199. Good value compared to regular skips.
This thread has prompted me to look at the ‘extra costs’ at my local tip (Reading), which would have been my alternative to the above but I couldn’t be arsed with multiple trips down there.
It seems there is a charge for loads of things now which were previously free at point of disposal.
How on earth do they administer this on the ground? Their website pretty much says ‘decision of the bloke at the gate is final on what you pay’ - I can imagine this leads to some massive queues whilst people argue the toss over 2 quid extra?

Anything in a black bin liner flung in the "un-recycleable" waste" bin
Nailed it. Amey who run the dump here (sorry recycling centre - I got told in the strongest terms its not a DUMP) have just reduced hours and now don't open until 10am and so one cannot 'dumop' before work. Consequence of this on a sunday am is that cars are queuing now both directions to get in before 10am because its got the same number of visitors compressed into 4/5 hours less time at weekends. Anyone else wanting to use that road will get caught up in it and one of the Islands largest tourist attractions is only several hundred yards aways so in peak season its going to be brutal. Thats progress for you.
Our local centre is open 8am until sunset 7 days a week and takes everything except asbestos (and have a separate solution for that)
That's probably why our council has an 85% recycling rate.
The next town will only allow residents on proof of residency and no commercial vehicles (I have a pickup).
They have a recycling rate of 33%

Tyres are an absolute bd to cut up and get into a bin liner apparently.Would anyone know the best way to cut tyres up, simply so that it's easier to transport them to the correct disposal facility?

I believe this is the case.

I've heard an angle grinder with a cutting disc works reasonably well, but it does generate quite a bit of smoke and stinks. So I've heard.Would anyone know the best way to cut tyres up, simply so that it's easier to transport them to the correct disposal facility?
I took a tyre to our local tip recently.... they wanted to charge me £4.50 to take it!
I said no thanks, and put it back in the car... when i went back with another bag he apologetically said he didnt make the rules, and i said I understood that. We got chatting...
He said they had so many people say no to the tyre charge, and then dump the tyre in the lane to the tip they installed CCTV to cover the lane... and fined a few for fly tipping. He went on to say the whole site is under surveillance and they are closely monitored. They are no longer allowed to help people with stuff out of their cars, due to health and safety. He said he hated watching people struggle, and hated the looks people gave him as he stood there.
He said fly tipping on a small scale had gone through the roof since the introduction of restrictions, he said he would ask people “whats in the black bag” and they woud openly say “household rubbish, got to make room in the bin for the stuff i can no longer bring here”
All kind of defeats the objective, but typifies council mentality.
