Paving has arrived, the base is down and ready for the flags.

But I can't decide whether to lay them on a wet 1:3 cement:sand mortar (full bed not dots) or on a dry cement sand screed and allow the moisture in the ground to set the bed. The dry screed will be a little easier as I'm not humping wet mortar about.

Any advice from those who have done it before please?

Thanks for the guidance

Re SBR: Up here in Oban we are a bit shot of a Wickes or most others TBH.
Homebase list it but Oban is out of stock, Jewson don't list it.
Will stall the project and see if Homebase can get it in, failing that mail order....

Jewson do stock SBR . I think it's listed as Cemflo Rendabond or something similar.
Yes, thanks, bought some yesterday, paid Jewson tax on their own brand. The Sika was £37! Even Homebase was only around £20ish, except they didn't have any.

Well I've about a day and a half work left to do, (I'm very slow) and it looks really good, (Wife chuffed).
Need to point up the slabs, 20mm gap, dry sand/cement? I've read some rather critical remarks on PH about all these fancy pointing materials..

Right, it's stopped raining, so better get out there, I've a driveway to dig for the garage before the Type 1 & concrete arrives for the base.

thanks everyone

Pics to follow I promise

Read the paving Expert pages, Jointex seems recommended but I'm rather concerned about not getting it down quick enough and leaving it all over the stonework.

Jewson do a Cementone and a Sika Pave but I can order the Jointex mail order.

Sorry for the delay, not a major construction scheme and there are still some works to complete.

The missing flag needs to be cut but there's likely to be another post in there for a handrail but the (excellent) supplier is waiting for some revised, angled, brackets from the manufacturer and the haven't arrived yet. (I also need to cut around the step).

I am going to place gravel around the edge and then on the other side I am looking at alternatives to retain. At one end of the patio it's virtually at ground level but at the other there's about a 450 - 500 drop. Sleepers?

And while teeth are itching, I was going to set the gate at the same level as the fence but "Management" was concerned that the smaller of out two mutts could squeeze under it so I lowered it. The fence is there to contain the dogs who would otherwise run riot around the rest of the garden. She can bring them home from the beach and push them in there for a while to dry,and drop sand.

If you count the steps into the dining area you'll note I've buried one. Management idea and a good one (for a change).
I didn't want the flags overlapping the step edge hence the slightly odd arrangement at the bottom of the steps.

Fencing is Fensys supplied by D&M Fencing (Stirling)
Stone flags are Raj Green supplied by Price Paving of Bedale in Yorkshire.
Pointing is Marshalls Weatherpoint 365

Big thanks to B1NNS and M3Jappa amongst all other contributions to this thread

Love the colouring of the stone when wet and a number of people (inc the guy helping with the garage base and the company installing some replacement windows) were well impressed with the Fensys fencing. Most impressed is "management" who got out there on a chair yesterday with the mutts.
Not sure if the base for the garage is is in the background of the photos but that's another story.
Cheers Guys
