New mattress advice

So, after many hard, prolonged poundings (or perhaps just based on its age), we need to replace our mattress.
Not a clue where to start.
Are these super-wonderful-magic 100-night-trial £1k mail order jobbers seen on TV actually as good as they claim?
Or do I just throw £199 at IKEA?

So Mrs CFK is quite taken by the idea of a Premier Inn bed having road tested a few.
Only a couple of mentions so far though.

I bought a Silentnight geltec 3000 last year and it's been superb.

Tried various hybrid/memory foam ones, just couldn't get on with them (some people seem to like them though)

I used to wake up with an aching hip, being a side sleeper.

Completely fine now.
