Considering the Banbury area for a place to move to.

What are your general thoughts on Banbury?
Are there nice parts and less nice parts? Would you avoid it altogether? What do I need to know about Banbury?
Anybody live there and do the occasional commute to London?

Cheers.

The way Banbury is expanding (like most towns) it'll encompass Bloxham sooner or later, but in the relative short term I'd say it's unlikely to make too much of a difference.

There is a massive redevelopment in the centre for shopping/cinema etc if that's your bag and if not it's easy to get lost in the many fields around Adderbury/Bloxham/Milton/Milcombe.

I moved from a South Northamptonshire village 5 years ago and whilst the property prices are noticeably higher once you cross the county border, in my mind it's a nicer part of the country.

There are also some cracking driving roads as you head into the Cotswolds and Caffeine and Machine is not far away either!
Hi, did you get my PM?

Thanks all for a plethora of really great feedback.

I think based on the common themes mentioned, we'll steer clear of Banbury and start to look at the surrounding villages and use Banbury station for the occasional (hopefully) commute into London.

Bloxham looks lovely. Will also take a look at some of the other places you've mentioned around Banbury. Just doing a search on Rightmove using the station as the central point.

Budget, not sure yet.

Am I correct in calculating that a commute would cost around £60-£70 a day from Banbury to London?

I’d only realistically need to go to London once a week or once a fortnight, so a season ticket is not viable.

£20 is great. Can you explain more about the travel card you use? I’ve no idea over and above the trainline.com basic pricing. Sorry to be a bit dense. :-)

If your going into London once a week your better off driving down to the tube and going in that way.... m40 to Ruislip or somewhere...

Railcard will have restrictions on when you can use the train in and when you can come home. I.e after 10am and you wont be able to use the express train home in rush hour

I commuted a lot over the years living in a local village with a nice brewery...

Ah I see. Not good news in that case. I’d need to be in the city by 8.30am and leaving around 5-6.00pm. Bummer.
As for driving to Ruislip, I don’t really fancy that option. Hmmm.

If Marylebone works for you, take the train! We used to drive down but the rail service is excellent and far quicker.

Looking on Trainline, leaving Banbury at 06.01 gets you there at 07:04 and retuning 18:37 would be £54

Lots of other time options though. There’s a big multi storey car park at Banbury station which is £8.50\day.
Thanks for that. It’s what I found as well. Was hoping there would be a cheaper way by train.

Need to have a think about living there now. I see that Kingham to Paddington is £51 plus parking. Currently at the end of the central line so £11 per day. Obviously it’s not just about travel costs, but it is a factor to consider.

Also looking at small towns and villages south and west of Milton Keynes station as that would be around £30 per day. Buckingham looked nice.

Cheers all so far.

Evening all.

Anyone know about Shipston-On-Stour, which is west of Banbury. Nearest station for the once a week or once a fortnight to London is Moreton in Marsh.

May well be a step too far as initially just looking to get a bigger place outside of London, so we looked within 5 miles of Milton Keynes station as it’s 30 mins and £25 return to London, so not much hassle. Trouble is we’ve not found anything right for us.

No idea whether a drive to the Moreton Marsh station to catch a nearly 2 hour journey to the office for £60 is at all viable or sensible.

Talk me out of it or talk me into it.
