Just moved house and roof has a lot of moss on the roof. It drops on the cars and blocks gutters. Just getting three quotes together for someone to do it.

I understand high pressure Jet washing is a no no but what is the best method and how do we stop it coming back.

First quote came in at £1450 which includes minor maintenance and washing soffits, windows etc. Which is from a company with a decent local reputation.

I took on Commercial building in a forest that had a roof caked in moss , I asked the landlord to clean it as part of the pre lease , which they did.

Looked amazing following the clean and ensured The soakaways wouldn’t clog with moss like they had .

However ....the landlord just jetwashed it and tbh it finished off the roof !! I’d never ever recommend jet washing , no chance in hell

All the decent roofers I know and speak to now say you should carefully scrape off and are so busy they tend to turn it down as it’s laborious , £1500 doesn’t sound a bad price if they take their time .

Due to the time it’ll take on there they shouldn’t really use a ladder so £500 could /will be scaffold costs . I’m sure lots will still use ladders (I’ve got no issue with that , the laws/hse guidance have changed/

If it was my house I’d just hire a cherrypicker and a telescopic window cleaning kit
Thanks for a sensible response. Some strange people on here! rolleyes

Thanks all, just to say, I am not “worried” about this at all. It’s not a big deal and certainly not worth getting up tight about. It is a nuisance more than anything with moss on paths, dropping onto cars, dropping onto sun room roof, blocking gutters and generally a nuisance. If I can get rid of it for a few years and not worry about having the gutters cleaned each year then I’m happy.

If you have concrete roof tiles, the moss can grow into the tile and break it up. Then there is the issue of gutters getting blocked and moss on the paving below all the time.

After getting quotes of about £1200, I decided to do it myself as I need the exercise and I've found it quite therapeutic.

I've so far spent 3 days doing it and have 1 more day left so as well as enjoying it, I've saved a few quid. The main gain though is that I've not got strangers on the roof "finding" work that would make a £1200 job £3K.
Yep,mine are concrete- quite a large high roof so I’m not getting up there. Best quote for manual scrape and spray of inhibitor plus wash down of gutters soffits etc is £600.

I recall reading that a lack of loft insulation causes moss on roofs. Warm and damp = moss. Take away the heat and the moss doesn't grow. Could be rubbish of course.
It is because we have masses of insulation
