To give a bit of background. I have a juwel fish tank with an in built corner unit filter and pump. Around 2- 3 weeks ago one of my silver sharks went missing, bearing in mind that he is around 10cm long. I blamed this on a tinfoil barb that decided to clear my tank of other fish.

But, i get back from work today and turn the light on and i have again two silver sharks. Not looking in good shape though. Off colour and very scatty. The only thing i can think of is that he got trapped down the side of the filter unit in the corner even though the gap just doesn't seem big enough. I can't understand how the poor little buggers still going, i just hope he fully recovers.

Has anyone replaced a corner unit filter system with an external filter and pump?

Yes.

Juwel Rekord - with corner filter, after some years went by the corner housing came unstuck and fell off (well floated actually).

The tank is now sporting a Fluval 3 internal, heater clamped on by plastic clips. Works a treat and been running in this manner for about 3 years now.

Your silver shark was probably inside the filter - i had a fish dissapear int here, there is actually a fair bit of space under the powerhead/next to the heater, once they find their way in. We found a few 'missing' fish in there over the years (with the aid of a torch!). Like you, we also blamed a number of innocent fish for eating them at one point...

I am also not sure how this topic relates to home cinema mind you...
Hmmmmm i'd cleaned the tank out only a week ago and there was nothing in the filter casing itself. I'm going to eventually fit an external filter and pump. I just can't believe he managed to live that long with out food. I've put some revitaliser tonic in to try and calm it down.

Even the mods are confused with the new layout hehe

Yep I lost a Royal Gramma in my old jewel Rio 180, I had assumed he had gone carpet surfing down the back, never to be seen again but no, a few says later I spotted him the filter tower(no sponges just a few small pumps) looking very pale, it was a right bugger to get him out, I had to fill the tank to the brim and wait untill he swam out. Poor think perked in the end and is now spending his days happily swimming in the "coral garden" display at Blue Reef in Portsmouth.

My silver sharks still a little scatty and pale but a little better. The thing i can't understand though is that we had cleaned the tank out around a week after he went missing. Took all the filters out and definately wasn't in there. Must have got stuck between the tank and the plastic casing. Just didn't think the gap was big enough for it to get through.

Yep, I've taken the corner filter out of my Juwel tank aswell. Very easy to do, and, to be frank, it's better out than in.

You will reclaim some lost volume - which the fish will appreciate.

Also, it saves the release of rubbish back into the tank when you clean the filter out, which, is pretty inevitable. All in all the external filter is the best option open to you

I also use an in-line heater which is very effective at heating water and removes another item of clutter from the tank.

Did it cost much to replace the heater and filter with external units? I don't think the thermostats in perfect condition either, got a mind of it's own sometimes. So i think i might as well replace that also.

The tank i've got is a rio 125. Budget wise i would be hopefully talking £50 but obviously i'll pay mostly what i need. I always think buy cheap but buy again.
