Ok, I'm sure that this doesn't matter to anyone else here, but my daughter just passed the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), and I'm so proud I could burst!
In the USA, veterinary students typically complete 3 or 4 years of undergraduate study at a university, culminating in a Bachelor's of Science degree, followed by another 4 years at veterinary college, after which they receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. In addition to completing their studies and clinical year, they also have to pass the NAVLE, which the individual states require before issuing a license to practice. It's a 6-hour comprehensive exam.
My daughter has wanted to be a veterinarian since she was 6, and she turns 25 on Friday. She took the NAVLE about two months ago and the results came out today.
In the US, veterinarians typically earn about 25% or less of what a physician earns, in spite of earning a place in a more competitive university program and spending as much time on their education. One result of that disparity is that usually more than 80% of vet students are women.

You are so right about nurses and technicians. My daughter said the doctors are taught to regard them as their partners, and the best have a passion and a skill-set that is often far more important to an animal's sense of well-being and safety.
